I used to be an avid airshow fan and have taken hundreds of pictures at local shows. I used to live in Guelph near a bird sanctuary and the Canadian stunt champion, who flew a Pitts Special like the little biplanes that the motocross guys were grabbing onto, used to keep his plane in Kitchener, not too far away. Whenever he was returning from a show he would do a complete pattern over the sanctuary, so I got a free show. I had a bush pilot friend who had a Chipmunk two seater and took aerobatics training fly me around doing loops and other stunts. The lamchevak was a particular thrill. The pilot heads the plane straight up and as the airspeed falls off the plane actually free-falls backward for a bit then tumbles in a spin until the pilot recovers control.
Biggest thrill of my life.
Bush pilots have a saying:
"There are old pilots and bold pilots, but there are no old bold pilots."

lamchevak

Yea, that Russian for
"Crapyerpants"

I used to do it with an RC plane,, you lucky scoundrel,, I woulda LOved a chance to get in a certified aerobatic plane. Ill always believe I woulda made a good pilot,, I Did get to fly some as a kid. Ive had hands on the controls of several, but never done so much as a loop or even a barrel roll. Dangitt,,

I have had limited amounts of aerobatics, in a vintage Tiger Moth aircraft during rare visits to Australia. It's quite disconcerting at first as you need to go into an almost vertical dive to get enough speed to loop the loop. Then you appear to rely on momentum as you actually loop, because the engine starves for fuel and cuts out. Propeller momentum restarts it once the loop has been done The G force pushes your head down somewhat. Barrel Rolls and Spins seem a little easier on the body. Rightly or wrongly there seems to be a fair attrition rate of aircraft at air shows, some times with tragic results for non participants or spectators. A Wikipedia search of air show accidents and incidents will confirm this. The attrition rate seems to be high among historic aircraft, particularly World War 2 type fighter planes. On a couple of occasions I've sat at the controls of a light Tecnam aircraft which is entertaining but quite expensive. I've also had a tandem parachute jump from 12000 feet which was interesting, particularly when you leave the aircraft and realise the proprietor hasn't supplied a rope ladder to let you get back in.

If I ever get to the ground under a parachute there will either be a plane that Has crashed or is about to crash OR I'm gonna have a bruise the
Size and shape of the end of a gun barrel in my back.

Some of the aircraft I have jumped out of, I was glad to leave.

My dad was a  left side gunner in a B-17 that was shot down over Germany during WW2 on Black Thursday, bombing ball bearing plants. Over 100 B17's went down over Shweinfurt.  650 crew men out of 2,900 died that day. His plane was all shot up and they were told to bail out but they had never been trained on how to use one and apparently not one of the crew were sure how to even put them on so they threw them out the windows to lighten the load and rode the plane down. My dad and the pilot were the only crew members that survived. They all survived the initial crash but  villagers pitchforked the rest when they crashed into a field. Now thats some crazy stuff for sure!

Another flight story- kind of funny:
When I was a student in Toronto there was another student who had just got his pilots licence and wanted to get his flight hours up to progress his qualifications. He would rent a four seater Cessna and charge $10 to three students for an hours flight out of Toronto Island airport to help defer the cost. He came into the common room and asked if anyone wanted to go for a flight. I said yes, another girl said yes and I asked my GF (later to become my wife of 41 years so far) who I knew was afraid of flying. She said no so I asked another girl, whereupon my GF said yes.
So off we go tooling around Toronto harbour looking at the tall buildings when someone asks "can we go up to a mile high?" So up we go.
The extra time required to do this makes the pilot run late (he has only rented the plane for an hour) so we speed back to the airport as fast as he can go.
Time to insert some factoids:
The Cessna is a very forgiving aircraft, and the stall warning buzzer will go off long before the aircraft actually stalls (looses lift to the point it won't stay up)
It has tricycle landing gear- a nose wheel and two wing wheels, but it also has a tail skid to protect the tail if it should have contact with the runway.
The end of Toronto Island runway is built out onto the water on rocks.
So there we were, screaming towards the end of the runway.
This is what we saw and heard, all within about 5 seconds: rocks right in front of us, then they fall away and all we see is sky, then the stall warning buzzer goes off, then he lands it on the two wing wheels and the tail skid, which makes a hell of a racket itself, then the nose comes down thump, and he almost tips it over turning onto the closer taxiway, so he won't have to taxi all the way down the runway. My wife to be got out and sat on the runway patting the ground crying.
At no time did I think we were in any danger, except when he almost tipped it over turning onto the taxi strip too fast.
My wife has only flown once since then, in a 747 to California to visit a friend, and she had some chemically induced help with her nerves.

My son is a certified ground school and flight instructor. Many times he has to recertify airline pilots in Cessna's because after time flying by computers they lose the feel for flying by the seat of their pants. He got his pilot license when he was 16. I was his first passenger willing, (actually very unwilling) to fly with him. He would mess with me like when we were taking off and he would ask me if I knew what certain knobs and switches were for as if he didn't know. Now when I go up with him he shows me some of the stuff he had to learn as a instructor. Like cutting power and going into rolling dives and spins. And cutting power until you drop like a rock and it feels like zero gravity. I was a United Airline employee for 23 years and it always amazed me how many of my fellow employee's were afraid to fly and would medicate themselves before daring to step on a plane

I always love the line about rockets being built by the lowest bidder... it goes for airplanes too.   :-?

Me too! I'm surprised that some of themC130s were even air worthy. My favorite was the shithook  :o

I believe the Royal New Zealand Air "Force" still uses the C130 Hercules and the Lockheed PB3??? Orion.

I was in the Air Force for 24years and was a civilian contractor for 7, so I had a total of about 18 years working on the C-130.
I now live about 2 miles from the base and get to hear them practice shelling almost every night.
You can tell when they are going to deploy, the "practice" triples and doesn't end until about 1:30 am, keeps me awake sometimes.

C130 is a fine machine.. noisy,ugly,functional..
Our squadron was invited to ride one. I have flown before. Never in a cargo hold. I knew what it would be like. I passed. Everyone who went regretted it. At least one guy puked.

BTW: C-130 is still in production.

I always enjoyed a chinook jump, but did very few of them. C-130 now, jumped them just about every way imaginable except tail gate of all things. I even jumped out of a Japanese C130 for my wings back at ol' Ft. Bragg in the early 90s. Cleanest plane I had ever been on, and they rang the bail out bell for us as we exited the aircraft. Good times.

I also noticed your tag name...we may have been stationed together, as I too, was a 12B for many moons.

Shelling?? Old_Rider, the C130 doesn't have armaments does it?

There are several models of the AC130, that "make it rain"....
just hit Youtube and type in  .... AC130 or C130 gunship ....

This one is ten minutes long...and you get to see them prepping her for fight...loading up the big shells..

I did check Wikipedia, and was surprised to  learn it had that role. I'm sure we couldn't afford those ones

They sound very loud too if you are on the ground while they are firing. At the Sapper Leader Course in the 90s we shared Cannon Range with them, and they would conduct a few runs while we were out of their target box.

I've jumped out of Chinooks too. It's always fun starting from front and making a running dive out the back  ;D . The biggest complaint about the C130 is being stuck for 16+ hours in those oh so comfortable hammock seats. Every Chinook I ever flew in had multiple hydraulic leaks. As with any helicopter - if you don't see any hydraulic fluid leaking, get off cause it's empty

I loved having a AC130 overhead (along with some A10's and Apaches)

Or an inflight rig on a C130 where there is no organization and people just start trying to put on parachutes all at the same time.
