Title: Carburetor, Mods
Post by MnSpring on 09/17/14 at 19:21:34

Carburetor, Mods.

Have this Carb (Mikuni, ‘24C4-H7Y2’)   From the 97  LS-650.
Thinking of modifying it, and putting it on the, 06 S40.

Thinking of, ’swirling’ the ‘atomized’ gas,
by, ’swirling’ the air, before it goes into the carb.

This has been done on many cars/trucks, which use a carb.
Some worked, some did not.
It’s   NOT  a  100 MPG  fix/change.
But it ‘may’ result in a 5-20 MPG increase?

Anyone done that, experimented with that, have any experience with that?

Reason:
1. I am, ‘frugal’. ( A  225 CC, I had, got 70-75 MPG)
Wouldn’t it be nice to have a 650 cc, getting over 50 MPG?
2. I am, frugal, !
3.  I am , Frugal’,  (OK  OK,  cheep) !   :D
4. Something to, ‘play’, with’.

Remembering, .27  CENT a  GALLON  Gas, and 18-20 MPG,
(If you drove it nice), was  COMMON !
(In a  350 large block and a 4,000 pound car)_

Now 3.50 a gallon, and 30 MPG is   WONDERFUL    LOLOLOLOLOOO
(In a little,  4 cyl, 'eco', boost engine, and a 2,000 pound car.)

Perhaps, a, ’steam’,  or ‘water vapor’ injection. ????
(Like  MANY  people did in the 70’s, and were  SUCCESSFUL)

So, just a thought.  Anyone experimented with this?

Attempts to "swirl" the air flow aren't really going to do much at cruising speeds.  The CV carb has a butterfly nearest the engine that will be partially blocking (limiting) the air flow at cruising speeds, and the slide that is controlled by engine vacuum will also be partially blocking the venturi as well.  Any swirling air will then have to be squished underneath the slide, then expand to go on the top and bottom of the butterfly, and any swirling motion will most likely be lost in the turbulence.

Most attempts at improving the performance of this type of carb are designed to make the flow more laminar.....not to make it swirl.  The idea of the "torque wing" is that during low throttle settings the air comes in below the horizontal wing, and it restricts the air from flowing down the face of the slide and causing turbulence as the air goes under the slide.

With proper jetting and a gentle riding style on a naked bike.....you can get close to 60 mpg on the Savage.  With a large windshield, saddlebags and a heavy rider......50 mpg may be about right.

I adjusted my carb too be a little more rich than the stock. I get around 53mpg running about 60-70mph down the highway
