Had a flat tire the other night. Thanks to a caring stranger I made it home with the bike in the back of his truck.

Obviously I'm considering the Shinko but you guys need to talk me into getting the 90 series tire. I can't get a 140/80 tire with the Shinko. I don't want my speedo to be off. I've read the taller tire is actually more accurate than the stock tire but haven't heard how close. Am I going to be in danger of getting a speeding ticket? Anyone have anything negative to say about the Shinko?

BTW, besides the obvious, when ordering tires, what's the difference between a front tire and a rear?

I've read the BB thread and am not too impressed with them. I've never actually ordered from them though.

I've ordered from them twice and everything went well.
They're a decent size company so you'll get your stuff..

Try a local aftermarket shop.Sometimes it's a better deal.I use one here that mounting and balancing is free with the wheel off the bike.Alot of shops around here won't put a tire on that they didn't get.Alot of times the tires on the internet are old.Tires are date coded.They don't want the liability of installing an out of date tire.

Needed new rubber for a 06, S40.
First I tried Motorcycle Super stores.
Didn't have, couldn't fine, the choices I requested.
Which their WEB site, SAID, "were in Stock'.
THEY Told me: "These will be perfect".

Got two tires, which were made in 2 DIFFERENT Countries,
(Different rubber compounds)
Made 2 years apart. By TWO Different Manufactures. Sent them back.

Then Tried B. B. (Total POS attitude)

Then went to Dennis Kirk.

Told them I am looking for a Matched Set,
(Yea I know others here say it don't matter,
on a car no problem, but their are only TWO tires on a M.C.)

Told them, 140/80-15 & 100/90-19 is what is stated.

They said:
We have a set 130/90-15 & 100/90-19,
in the MT66, (Perilli), I ordered them, got them the next day.
BOTH 2014's and Both same countries made.

Now the bike is 140-80-15 rear. (Which is hard to find)
BUT, many people put on a 140/90-15, or 150/90-15.
If that tire works, Great !
it, depends ALL on how you have it set up.
( I think a 130/90-15 works better)

I choose the 130/90-15 rear. For a, STOCK bike.
A Bit narrower, and a bit taller. But it fit/works/no rub, Just Fine.
And it drives Just Fine. And the SpeedO is Closer,
(As to GPS) than before.

So my suggestion is D.K., and say:
130/90-15 / 140/80-15 & 90/90-19 / 100/90-19.
See what they got in a Match Set

The MT-66's were: 69.00 & 89.95.

And at D.K. A, 'Real LIVE, person answers the phone'.

Just my experience.

I've read a few people recommending the 130/90 tire. I may just go with that. Apparently there are no rubbing issues and it handles better.

I'm just a little nervous about ordering a non-stock sized tire.

Hmmm, not a lot of choices out there for a 130/90 either. Any recommendations for a good tire?

Metzelers seem like the best option but I'm cheap! ;D

I agree with Mn for the Pirelli MT66s. I have had them for around 12k miles and threy have been confidence inspiring in the torrential downpours here in central Florida. They handle the corners I take without issue, and barely move over the railroad tracks mid corner I go over daily.

A Meztler is worth considering if you ride 6k miles or more per year...
They are heavier, with deeper tread, which will give you 20k miles or so...
.. but, with all that tread to wear out,.. they are heavy, and later in the tire life, they will have a deeper flat spot down the center....

I ride about 2 to 4k miles per year... so, I expect my Shinko to last 4 or 5 years...
Shinko's are light tires...they still grip good and should last 12 to 16k...
Clearance problems are only with a couple of bolts if you have stock saddlebag mounts.... a $4,... 5 minute fix...

Don't over-buy tires... too much is too much... any tread that lasts longer than 5 years can be dangerous...
Tires dry out, harden, and lose grip...
..(I learned my lesson by crashing a Ninja on 8 year old tires with plenty of tread)...
You're safer riding a 3 year old bald tire, than 6 year old tire with lots of tread...(not that you should do either)...

I'm really torn between buying the stock size tire which won't affect my speedo and buying a taller 140/90 which is more common but will cause my speedo to under-read.

Everyone seems to love the Shinko for the price and apparently it will last a while and be a good riding/handling tire but I can't get it in a stock size. It comes in the 140/90 size though.

I've found a few 130/90 tires that I like for a decent price. They won't cause my speedo to be off by too much. Now the problem is I can't find tubes to fit this size!

What to do? What to do?

Did Suzuki intentionally put a weird size tire on this bike to make it hard for us? ;D

Most factory stock bikes, overstate mph by 5 to 10%..... ours included...(They get a double advantage with this... owners think their bikes are faster,... and they can't be sued over a speeding ticket)...

...(ODO's,.. although they are powered by the same cable, work differently and are much more accurate)...(ODO's are a direct mechanical connection.. speedo's have some sort of excited coil doohicky. I could explain further, but what's the point, when neither of us would understand?)...

...but,.. it's not just the stated tire size...
As a tire wears, it's circumference changes and speeds read different...the amount of air also varies... and the centrifugal force as speed increases, makes tires taller...
(this is why tires can seem fine when installed, but rub at speed)...

So, basically... no speedo reads accurate...
...(even scarier than that,...no police radar does either)... ;D... (they need to be re calibrated at regular intervals)...

(I don't even trust GPS to be truly dead on 100%)...
The only sure measure... is a measured distance and a stopwatch...(and that requires a constant speed)...

Anyway... ...yes. anyway...
A 140/90-15 gives a closer to accurate mph than stock... (you ain't distorting it, yer' correcting it)...as our stock reading, under...

...but,.. no two speed calculators will read exactly the same,.. ever...
Perfection is an illusion...
So don't worry about it... or if you're really worried, just ride under the limit...
I hardly ever look at at my speedo... (if I'm rockin', I know I'm speedin'... if I'm puttin', I know I'm not)...

Okay 'bot, I've kinda talked myself into a Pirelli MT66 140/90 now.

So you are saying that even though this tire is nearly an inch taller, it will actually be more accurate than stock? Going strictly by a calculator and not factoring any tire growth at speed or speedo error, the 140/90 will be about 3 mph off at 60 mph. In other words, the speedo should show 57 when actual speed is 60. That's not too bad I guess.
