Title: Another seat mod thread...
Post by NV1P on 09/09/14 at 11:08:38

Last Sunday I participated in a group ride, which was a good 2.5 hours of non-stop riding. It's now Tuesday, and my rear end is still sore. I've done the seat lift mod, and I noticed it does help quite a bit. However, it doesn't help enough for long rides, and it does nothing for the passenger.

I'm very interested in what Ridgerunner13 did with his, however I have a one piece seat on my 2006. Would it be prohibitively difficult to adapt both the rider and pillion seats from the V-Star to fit? And does anyone know if the pillion is any more comfortable than stock?

I really would love to spring for the Corbin, but money is money, and I can't shell that much out at the moment.

Regards,
Sam

Well, how often and how long do you ride normally?

It does take a bit of riding and adapting to get used to sitting in the saddle - and even when I am in my car for 2.5 hours straight I need to get out and walk around a bit.

I had to work my way up to longer rides a little bit at a time.....I needed to practice "sitting".

I try to ride as much as I can! Don't we all?

Usually it ends up being about 3 or 4 hours a week, and usually on weekends. Mostly 15-30 minute trips. I personally can drive my car for 5 hours straight and not have a problem. Though this week has been interesting. Still hurts a bit to sit longer than 2 hours. Then again, it's an excuse to not be at my desk at work ;D

So, question is, can anyone recommend a replacement seat that could be adapted to fit the S40 that is good for both me and my girlfriend?

You have 3 choices:

1)  Buy a Corbin....the only available aftermarket seat.
2)  Have a company like "Spencer" modify your existing seat to fit you.
3)  Adapt a seat from another motorcycle that fits you better.

Spencer:

The problem with #1 and #3....you really don't know that the different seat will be any more comfortable than the stock one.

I watched an interesting thing on TED last night.
The presenter had lost both legs below the knee.
And had them replaced with bionic feet... no sh!t.
Which I recommend you all search out and view.

But, he discussed how they engineered the sockets, the most comfortable he's ever used.
He said in this day and age it's amazing that shoes can still create blisters.
Where your body is soft, the interface should be hard.
Where your body is hard, the interface should be soft.

So, except for a couple of hard points... the challenge is creating a shape that'll conform to your individual posterior.  There is a packing method where they take expanding foam shoot it into a bag put it in a box, lay the part on top then throw in another bag of foam on top then close up the box.  We could simply gut the stock seat, insert a bag, fill it with the foam, seal it up then sit on it till it hardens.

Seat cover... sheepskin or even faux sheepskin...
Not only aids in cushion,.. it keeps the seat cooler in summer and warmer in winter...

The fake stuff is actually better,... it don't smell,... it's washable, and dries quickly... it also stretches for a nice fit...
You can buy a yard at a fabric store for $10...

I put a seat from a V-Star on my bike, I made a bracket to fit the mounting points on the frame and attached it to the underside of the seat, ended up looking like a big "T" I thought I had pictures of the bracket, but I don't. It wasn't hard, if I can do it most anyone can. I got the seat for free from someone who just wanted to get ride of it, so I think it was from a V-Star.

Here is a picture of the seat on the bike.

Was that the one where at the end one of the survivors of the Boston Marathon bombing was able to dance again? That had to have been one of the more powerful talks given.

I think I'm going to take the challenge of adapting a V-Star seat. Preacher, did you start out with a one piece or the older two piece? Does anyone foresee any added problems since mine has a stock one piece?

And would anyone have advice on how to make it more comfortable for a passenger? Seriously, if I get a new seat and she can't ride I'll just be exchanging one pain in the butt for another.  :D

Yep, that's the one.

I started with a one piece seat on this bike.

However, the passenger part from the V-Star was a lot bigger than the stock passenger seat from a two piece set up. I am not sure, but I think it was longer and wider. I don't have them to compare anymore.

But I didn't want a screamer seat on mine anyway, hence the rack. It covers up the ugly rear fender and gives me a good place to strap my whatever on. Of course, I guess you could strap your significant other on as well.  ;)

Hi everyone. I just wanted to say that you should do some reading on the star bikes forums before Screwing one of those seats on your bike. I've spent a lot of time reading on there as I own an 1100 vstar custom. If there is one thing that everybody changes or wishes they could change on those bikes its the seat. Both rider and pillion are brutal. I personally have degeneration in my hip and spine a long with torn discs and nerve impingement. Strangely enough my back feels pretty good while riding. But my butt takes a beating. 1 hour at a time is about it for me. Then it's walk it off for 10 or 15 mins. There must be another seat combo out there that would be better than the vstar seat. I'm gonna cut mine apart this winter and try to mod the foam in side. Good luck.

;D...
Truth is,.. I don't know of any bike, that people don't want a better seat...
Truth is,... we aren't meant to sit for more than an hour without stretching...
Truth is,... what's the big hurry?...
Just take 5 minutes to wake up yer' butt... and enjoy the scenery...

If you ever manage to get a seat that will allow you to go over a 100 miles (which will run you out of gas)... you are inviting a thrombosis blood clot that will allow you to rest eternally...

Move yer' ass... it's good for you...
Since when is the measure of your manhood,.. how long you can meld yer' bum into a seat?... ;)...

I have a Corbin seat on my Buell Blast and I can ride in comfort until it is time to refuel, which is about 100 miles. The seat is so much better than anything else that I ever rode that I am going to put a Corbin seat on my Honda and when I get an S40 it will get a Corbin seat.

Sometimes you do get what you pay for.

I suspect we all want to change something about everything. Seats are pretty easy things to change. The V star seat is a lot bigger than the savage seat, that is what I was going for. Is it more comfortable? Well, bigger is better. I didn't think the stock seat was all that uncomfortable, just too small for my seat. The back of the V Star seat seems to come up too high for my taste, but it is better than what I had, at least I think so. But one change leads to another.

I really did nothing to my '87. With this '06, I keep seeing little things that I think I can make "better" at least for me. So, I think I've been bitten by the mod bug.

Maybe that is part of the fun of having a bike, making it yours.
