Title: Cancelling turn lights.....
Post by raydawg on 08/28/14 at 20:59:48

Anybody know of, or have tried, installing a relay in the turn indicator circuit?
I was thinking some sort of time delay?

There was a guy on the Honda vtx site that made one... he sent one to me as a beta test... it didn't turn the signal off.... but it was a beeper to remind you the blinker was still on. If your signal was blinking the dang phizo was screaming at you....
Was super loud.....

The problem with the relay would be setting the time delay. If you approach a corner and turn the signal on, go around the corner and the relay turns it off it would be easy to figure out the proper delay. BUT- if you approach a red light intending to turn, how would you know how long you would be stopped? You would have to keep turning the signal on which is just as inconvenient as forgetting to turn it off. My solution was to get in the habit of pushing the cancel button  when changing gears after a turn. I hardly ever forget to cancel the turn signal anymore.

FWIW, some of the guys I know that have Harleys don't much like the self canceling turn signals. Go to the HD forums and you'll hear the same thing. Might turn out to be more trouble than it's worth.

Harley's use a bank sensor to tell when the bike is leaned over and straightened back up, a timer and some other tricky electronics to decide when to shut the signals off. Even with all that they are not as 100% reliable as pushing a button to turn them off yourself.

My '77 Yammy XS400 had self-cancelling signals.  I think it was tied to the odometer and cancelled at something like 2/10's of a mile.  From what I remember, I think it worked well.
I would rather have them cancel and hit the switch again rather than just stay on like they do on our bikes.  On the S40, there's no audible ticking (like on my Buddy scooter) and the indicator light down on the gas tank isn't easily seen in a FF helmet.  The ticking on my scooter signals is perfect.  Just loud enough to be heard without being an annoying beep or other tone.

Yup, lousy location for the repeaters  - for all that stuff really. I look at the lamps themselves to check. The stock lamps aren't all that attractive, but at least they are easy to see :)

Just some thoughts on what it would take to build one of these....

The timer, IMO, would be kind of iffy for me - I sit at lights for minutes waiting for a green arrow.

I do know that if I'm turning, I'm also squeezing the clutch lever a number of times. So, if I have my turn signals on, and I release my clutch lever twice, I'm probably done turning, and the signals should cancel.

For lane changing, the clutch activity would not apply - in that case, a timer would be better. So, if I'm traveling at a speed of greater than 8 MPH, and I flip on the turn signals, my signals should cancel in a number of seconds (30?).

These types of controls can be built with an embedded computer (Search for arduino). Detecting the clutch activity and determining if the blinkers are on is doable with voltage detection. Detecting if the Savage is moving is more difficult, as the speedo is mechanical. This would require putting sensor on the speedo cable (hall effect sensor), a bike speedo, or a GPS.

I use a couple of $3 buzzers from radio shack because that was easier :-)

Here is the kit that stops the count when the brake light is applied and continues when you start rolling again. Another words, it still works at stop lights. It will work with our stock directional switch too.

I think I will look into those, thanks.
Kinda pricey but well worth the investment if it saves one vehicle from pulling out in front if me cuz I left my dang blinker on  :o

I don't like having to hold the brake the entire time...(would require left handed booger picking and scratching)...
:-/...
...might as well hold the blinker cancel button with your left hand and save $100...

thumperclone has an audible ts relay
try retrobikes.com
orrrr google audible turn signal relay

a quick glance to the speedo works too

Oh....I missed that. No, gotta get them boogers when opportunity avails itself  ;D

Couldn't you pick with the right hand, brake with the right foot, steady yourself with the left foot, left hand is open for...    :-? whatever you want it to be.

Not saying I'd do it all of the time, but it would work. Hahaha ;D
