Title: valve noise
Post by driftwood on 08/25/14 at 12:56:57

Valve tap 95 savage. Seller swore this tap was not harmful just check clearance  soon.after about 30 milesit sounds much worse. Now there is gremlins grinding in the gearbox. Are there any knowledgeable Savage owners around Charleston, Sc who may be able to open it up and help solve the problem.
Thank, Paul

1st thing to do is get the valves adjusted.
Make sure you're using the right oil.
Make sure your idle speed is above 1000 rpms

I would change the oil and check it for debree.

If this does resolve the issue then pop the head cover off and check the cam and rockers for wear.
And if you're in for a penny, you might as well go whole hog and check the cam chain tensioner.

PS, add your location to your profile for later reference.

Gremlins in the gearbox?... Are you sure?...

We have 3 common noises that are very often mistaken for engine noise...
1- headlight bezel ring
2- speedo housing
3- front belt pulley nut
You can check the headlight and speedo by pressing your hand against them as you ride (careful!)...
...the pulley nut needs to be checked with a giant wrench...32mm...

ok, I agree with both above comments. Listen to these guys they know their stuff. If you still cant figure this out or really just need some help doing it I would be happy to lend a hand. I live in Charleston (James Island) and have two savages and one is in desperate need of valve adjustment as well. This offer goes for any riders near me who may need a hand building confidence in wrenching. Door is always open. PM me for contact info.

The guy who sold me the bike I think is more a dirt bike mechanic, who offered to buy the bike back and I would only lose tax, title and plate costs. But I really want a bike that I can ride comfortably without having to worry it will break any minute.
Paul in Charleston,  SC 725-8914 Thanks...l

So I made it over to driftwoods place yesterday and this is what we found.

Versy, expect an email from him soon.

Y'all think he can get by with this chain for a while with the versy installed?

what is that?... 22mm extended?  It's pretty far out.

You can expect to get half of whatever mileage you currently got.

So, another 10-13,000 miles? Great!

Driftwood, I still think its worth a new chain. Its just going to fail (less likely) or need replacing eventually anyway (more likely). Plus if you are already wanting to get at the head plug leak might as well do the chain too.

I am working on gathering all the parts as we speak. It's the cash flow @ present that is the biggest hindrance. I will surely let you know as soon as possible then we can get to it.
Thanks again-Paul

I would not assume that its 10-13K, you have no idea how many miles are on that chain. I would assume you would get 4-6K out of it 10K max and if you baby it.

I'm with splash07 on how much longer that chain will last. Another 5,000 miles will about trash depending on how hard you ride.

Well, installing a Verslavy will get you through this riding season and into the winter....when a longer down time is more easily tolerated.

Then you can decide if the cam chain becomes a winter project.

from my own personal experience...
and looking over the adjuster life results...
You can expect to double the current mileage on your chain with a verslavy.
However, being a second or third hand bike, you can't guarantee the chain has never been changed.  But 10k is a average minimum before needing a verslavy and doubling that is a safe bet.
and you have the added insurance with the slot and pin that you'll won't drop the plunger into the gears.
