Title: Exhaust wrap lesson
Post by Spamy on 08/18/14 at 22:21:59

Just a lesson learned. When I rebuilt my bike the pipe looked terrible so I decided to wrap it in fiberglass wrap.

Well it seemed to work well for about 2 years.  Perhaps the 105 to 110 degree weather contributed a bit, but the header is trashed. The excess contained heat destroyed the inner pipe, it separated so that the heat filled the outer pipe and it either just toasted the metal or actually melted it.  Its all perforated and wasted.

Either way its junk now. New header on now and I think if anything I would BBQ paint it in the future or a coating.

I can post pics if anyone wants to see it.  Ive heard of it happening but this is the first time I had experienced it.

good lesson to share. I have exhaust wrap and know its just a matter of time before it takes my header. Just waiting for a decently priced aftermarket header to hit the market.  8-)

Pics... are always welcome...
We can refer others to this post in the future... ;)...

It may be that the added insulation increases condensation and rust...

Thanks for sharing this experience...

Maybe anyone determined to wrap it would be ahead to get a header made at the muffler shop. If you do that, study the end of the header. Inside,at the top end,is an internal cone, meant to control reflected pulses.
