Title: Check your cables!
Post by philjayny on 08/14/14 at 21:07:16

Went for a 40 minute bike ride. Last mile on the home stretch, and my bike is acting weird.

  • Bike is idling low
  • Gears are hard to change
  • Can't get it in neutral
  • Clutch seems constantly engaged

I make it home, flip the lights on for a once around:

Guess I'm not riding this beautiful week-end after all...:o

Back in the 70's.....my local Suzuki dealer would have stocked a clutch cable for just about any current model.  I am not sure if they are still able to do that with so many models available.

Call around to a few shops and see if they have one.....you might be able to get a cable and be riding really quickly.  If they have to order one or you order one online.....it will take a while.

Don't know where you are located....but if you have a local motorcycle salvage yard that might be a good source as well.  Pinwall Cycle in Mansfield, OH is a good one if you are anywhere near there.  (HINT.....Update your personal information to include your City and Stage so we can offer more localized help).

Been there, done that, got the t-shirt.

(Note: The third of 18 local Suzuki dealers had the cable in stock.)

I may not be a mechanic, but I do know pulling wire.  Attached a 3' long 1/16" cord to the broken cable, pulled the cable down from the handlebar to the engine end, remove old cable and attach the cord to the new cable and pulled the cord back up to the handlebar -- no need to remove tank or anything.  Back on the road in less than an hour.  Sometimes I love L.A.

It's a lump stuck on the end of the cable. You can get a butane torch at Lowe's for$10.00,solder and flux, about another ten bucks. Not riding
? Try sending new

but haven't needed them yet.

Thanks for the pointers. I've already ordered a new cable which should be here by next week. Just an excuse to do more tinkering I guess  ::)

I'll change my info to include my location! (NYC)
