Title: Cant get the oil plug loose?!? Post by bobthekerr on 08/13/14 at 22:10:05 Trying the drain my oil, I am aware of where the drain is, i am removing the cap (top) and then go to get the plug (underneath) and it wont come loose. I have the bike propped up an level, but not elevated, its on the ground in my garage. I am facing towards the bolt from the kickstand side and I am turning CCW, but it wont budge. I am afraid to wrench it too hard. What should I do? :-/ |
Title: Re: Cant get the oil plug loose?!? Post by Serowbot on 08/13/14 at 23:07:17 ;D ;D ;D... Option 1... tip the bike upside-down,... and drain the oil that way from now on... ;D... Option 2... if you are sure you have the correct bolt...you're sure?... Remove that bolt... ...(go to the other side of the bike... (assuming you are a righty)... and put a wrench on the bolt... hold the wrench in your left hand, pressure it toward the rear.. and tap the end of the wrench with a hammer using your right hand... (use short, sharp taps... hitting toward the rear from the from the front of the bike)... Once it comes off... thank me.. and don't over-tighten the new one... ...(people tend to over tighten these bolts... it's only holding back liquid... it's not keeping your wheels on)... (a little snugger than a soda bottle... soda bottle plus a tiny..."uhhh!")... Jes' git' it out... I don't think it will strip undoing it, no matter how tight it is... it has a lot of threads...(hammer taps work better than brute force)... Best luck... ;)... |
Title: Re: Cant get the oil plug loose?!? Post by justin_o_guy2 on 08/13/14 at 23:39:10 Definitely get on the side away from the side stand. Yeah, hammer slaps will do what brute force won't. Wrench on bolt, pointing towards the front tire, drive down on it. A friend to help keep the wrench on maybe step down on it. |
Title: Re: Cant get the oil plug loose?!? Post by Todd James on 08/14/14 at 05:55:21 If you have a 6 sided box wrench definitely use that rather than a 12 point wrench. You are less likely to round off the bolt head and the the hammer taps will be transmitted to the bolt better. Remember, it's a 14mm bolt head. Avoid using a 9/16 wrench. |

9/16 won't damage the bolt. In a pinch, you can use 9/16 (14mm), 5/8 (16mm), 1/2 (13mm), 5/16 (8mm), 13/32 (10mm), 11/16 (17mm), 3/4 (19mm) and 15/16 (rear axle large end) 6 point wrenches and sockets on Savage/S40 fasteners. Won't work for Allen screws. |
Title: Re: Cant get the oil plug loose?!? Post by Serowbot on 08/14/14 at 08:44:43 Speaking of over-tightening...(just to emphasize for noob lurkers)... ;)... We have had a member that got an oil plug so tight it cracked the block!... Very important... not to over-tighten steel bolts that go into soft aluminum... ...( not directed to you, Bob,.. just FYI for general readers)... Best luck... (did you get it out yet?)... :-?... PS... my original oil bolt was a 17mm... on my 97'... If you have one of those, change it to a 14mm... it's much easier to get a 14mm wrench in that tiny space... ;)... |
Title: Re: Cant get the oil plug loose?!? Post by bobthekerr on 08/14/14 at 13:43:50 Thanks everyone! I just needed decent 17mm monkey wrench; then it came out just fine. My bike is 95 LS650 and the bolt was 17mm, not 14mm. Filled her up, topped off the gas. Took it for a lil spin, came back and adjusted the mixture screw by going right, then left and until it hummed just right, then gave the throttle screw a 1/8 turn and she sounds pretty good to me. Need a tach to be absolutely sure though i guess. |
