Title: cam gear noise
Post by hammer650 on 08/13/14 at 19:29:59

Have a real problem or not,?  Got a great deal on a1999 savage like 700 bucks looks great and all stock with 10,ooo miles.  Rode it home from tenn to Ala. Quiet plenty of power no noise whatsoever. Checked oil in window NONE . Drained and measured oil and it had only 1.2 quarts in case and filter. Installed new k@ n 137 filter and 2 quarts of oil now it sounds like a handful of gravel in the crankase.  Apparently oil has a lot to do with these things. Have spent my whole life building drag cars from frame up to the engines but have never experienced anything like this. Whole nother world . Any suggestions?  Thank you

Rotella 15 w 40.   Drained then tried straight 30 weight. Same noise.Sounds like on left side of bike. Is there a oil pressure tensioner on that chain?

Nope, spring loaded and it's on the right. (as you sit)

if you feel tapping next to the oil filter cover, it's the cam chain.

People HAVE gotten the filter on backwards.
It's not impossible that the cam chain tensioner needs attention.
If it sounds that bad,,I'd drain it and look at it.
Am I trAcking right?
It sounds worse after the oil change?

Only thing I know to try is to drain and only put back 1.2 quarts of oil.  Hate to run that way but its all I know to do  if it works I will drive it till it gives up then scrap it.  Cant believe only 10.000 and its scrap.  Oil filter was put on just as old filter was taken off simple r and r. Will double check tomorrow. Its still laying in the parts cleaner case side down

if you can push the oil filter cover all the way home with a single finger, then you got it on right.

That is the cam chain tensioner making noise. My 03 was the same way with fresh Rotella 5W40, sounded like a 2 stroke with a stuck throttle rolling down a boulder field. Valves were set perfectly, yet the top end sounded like someone had thrown a handful of nuts and washers into the bore. Pulled the Versy tensioner from my 98 Savage (which has too many electrical issues to detail right now), installed it in the 03, and ALL the odd noises went away.

If I could get the clutch cover sealed up (gasket ordered Saturday, still hasn't arrived) I'd be riding it. The pair of them would honestly still be in the classifieds though, just too little for where/how I ride.

As far as scrap by 10K miles, that's a bit early, they usually have terminal failures at 25K or better. The Versy mod stops 95% of those losses...

Found out today why only one quart of oil in crankcase . If ya got anymore the chain picks up and it rattles like  gravel in a beer can. Great way to stop noise I guess if ya want to sell.   Looks like chain and tensioner . Where ya get parts for this thing? Had to order oil filter so I know the parts are scarse. But I love that one cylinder tourque.  Wait the headplug leaked the oil out.  So need that to  wow the things we do to ride.  Thanks for the help V1

That's important to know.  Run low on oil and the cam chain doesn't get oiled.

There is a vendor review thread in the marketplace.
I get good service from partsoutlaw

Do the Versy mod while you're in there,Or wait and prove that the motor is worth the trouble.

"Verrrry In tra rest ing",  (said in the voice of, 'Arty', from SNL)

The 97 I am playing with, Looks Real good, (And it is  RED), but had lots of noise,
Felt/Sounded/ thought, it was the CCT.
Also it was WAY  overfilled with, (PO said, just, MC oil), and he filled it so that little glass was covered, while on the kickstand).  :D
Checked the CCT,  it was almost out, replaced,
Checked valves, they were, .003 to .006,
Adjusted them, (as best I could with these fat fingers in a tight space)
to .004.   Put it RT3, a once of Redline, started right up. A  LOT less noise, BUT, still more than the 06.

Ginna play with it bit, drive it around a bit, determine if I want to keep it, or sell it next Spring.

But, 'Low Oil',  no noise ?  'Very Interesting".
