Title: tire wear ? Post by kimchris1 on 08/09/14 at 06:02:27 Ok Genie has over 17,000 miles on her original tires. Her rear tire has plenty of tread along the sides yet I recently noticed that the center is smooth. The tire type that is on her is a IRC GS 18R 140-80-15 Is this normal wear for this type of tire and am I replacing too soon? I can provide a pic if needed. I did have it checked about 1.5 months ago and a guy at Les Schwab told me I had plenty of tread left, then again I don't remember the center being smooth like it is now. It's new tire time,... especially if those tires are more than 5 years old... ...and, you're in wet country,.. you really need good tread to channel rain.. Be safe,.. Get new tubes too... and ask for a 90' angle valve stem on the rear.. pointing brake-side... (easier air checks)... |

It tends to be cool and damp, ideal conditions for keeping rubber (real or synthetic) viable. The spare tire (looks brand new, no checking at all) under my 49 Dodge truck is factory issued... |

I ran those tires to over 12000 miles and replaced them this spring. The front tire still had plenty of tread; only the rear was running close to the wear bars. But I am loving my new Mettzelers. |

Title: Re: tire wear ? Post by kimchris1 on 08/10/14 at 20:19:01 Asst Mgr at work lastnight. looked at the tire, says it was caused most likely by running while low on pressure. He had one do it on his HD in a matter or a 90 miles period. I am thinking of having the front one done as well as being it is as of the same age and mileage as the rear. It is not showing the wear as the back one is. So is it good to go ahead and change them both out at the same time? I am noticing a wobble at times and will cage it till Thursday when the rear one is replaced. Thanks guys, hugs :) kim & Genie |

I don't know what year your bike is....but if it is more than 5 or 6 years old, you should get a new front tire even if there is still some tread on it. Age is a considering factor when you are bouncing around on only 2 tires. Tires age and the rubber compound gets hard, and it is most noticeable when the roads are wet. I have a friend that rides aggressively and he will only ride 2 seasons on a set of tires - 4 years is my reasonable limit. My Chevy Avalanche has the original tires for 2002 on it....and they are downright scary on wet roads (I will get new one soon, they are expensive and I don't drive it much in the rain.) Dave |

The shop is closed on Monday so will call again in the a.m. and see about having the front one done as well. Post by Serowbot on 08/11/14 at 22:01:04 It sounds like you already know this,... but, new tires have a release coating on them,... it's like silverstone cookware... made to let the tire come out of the mold... ... and it's slicker than snot... be very careful making turns for the first 20 miles... and remain careful for the first 50 or so... It don't hurt to wedge a little cardboard sign in your handlebars or windshield... or hang something odd, like a ribbon or neckerchief to your bars... to remind you as you ride... "NEW TIRES!...RIDE CAREFUL!"... After 100 miles you're good to go... Be safe... ;)... |

Post by Dane Allen on 08/14/14 at 11:39:28 Hmmm....stock rear was replaced around 14,000 but I just replaced the front tire last weekend at around 19,500...yeah it was bald in the center but it doesn't rain here much. I replaced the stock front brake pads at around 7,500 because I was reading the forum and cam across someone saying they only last about 6,000. After the "oh sh!!" moment passed I got the new pads and I had about two sheets of paper thickness left on the pads. The new organics (FA-06???) have lasted about 3,500-4,000 max and I may look to the sintered next time... |

I like getting all the bang from my $$$ and I feel I did with the old tires. I would rather replace than have one or both blow out while riding. Tires can go bad from sitting as well as riding.
