Title: smokes when started cold
Post by crvn5jo on 08/08/14 at 12:35:38

So I just bought this 2001 Suzuki savage and im having an issue with it smoking in the morning for the first 45sec or so.it starts and runs fine and it can sit at work for 10 hours and no smoke but after sitting over night lots of smoke for 45 sec or so. Also im not sure if the kickstand would have anything to do with it but the peg/screw that holds the kickstand on was almost all the way out so my bike was leaning really far over ! Fixed the kickstand today but motorcycle shop is saying they might have to pull the motor to check it and were looking at $400 to $800 . Im just really wondering what would cause the smoke at cold start and if there is anything I can do to make it better without spending $800 .... any help would be appreciated greatly thanks

Are we talking about white smoke from condensation? How the oil level?

The oil level is normal but I have only ridin her about 20 miles since I bought her.the smoke is a heavy white smoke and it stinks like oil kinda.its just weird that I park it during the day for 8-12 hours and no smoke on cold start but sitting over night for 12-14 hours and I get the white smoke and btw it comes out the back of the pipe and also looks like it also comes out from the front of the motor somewhere .

Sounds like water condensation... it builds up in the muffler and you evaporate it out when you run it...
Nuttin' to worry about... all mufflers do dat... ;)...

And it clears up after 45 secs? Where from the front is the smoke coming from? Cylinder or exhaust header? I think if it stops when operating at normal temp it has to be moisture in exhaust somehow since this bikes have no coolant.
Did you put fresh new gas in the bike since you got it?

It seems to come from the header and out the back of the muffler.I just filled it up with 2 gal of premium this morning. It is white smoke but also smells like a old chevy truck....it only seems to do it if it sits over night but not during the day.  Would condensation smell like burnt oil kinda? Could it be valves or valve guides ? Its got 12,000 mils all stock...also it lets out a pop from the muffler every time I shut her off

We pretty much all get the pop from muffler at shut off :)

Honestly,.. I think your bike is fine, and I wouldn't worry at all...
Water in the muffler smells like oil, because it coming out of your muffler and it's dirty in there...

BTW... I would never, ever go back to that motorcycle shop... Those guys a trying to screw you...
Yup...  ;)...

PS... where are located?... (it's good to put that in you personal info)..
There may be a site member that can take a look for you...
No shop should want $400 to $800 just to figure if you might have a problem...
Also,.. you don't have your gender stated,... are you female?... mechanics love to rip-off females... (no offense, either way)... :-?...

My bet is the valve seal.  http://m.ebay.com/itm?itemId=290977051463
They work like an umbrella to keep oil from running down the valve guide.  If the deal goes bad you will have smoke on the start up and once it warms up the clearance is reduced between the valve stem and the guide.

It can sit all day and be fine,.. it only occurs after sitting overnight...
...and the smoke is white,... not blue/gray...

I'm guessing water vapor...
Also, the bike only has 12k miles...

Let's not be sending this person off to get an expensive repair to cure the weather...
:-/...

Okay,... 32 year old, male, Oregonian...
...(add that stuff to your personal info... so I don't embarrass myself anymore)... ;D...

You're in a very wet place... anything that ain't running 24/7 up there... is gathering moisture... (Rolling Stones?)...
I even get condensation here in Tucson... where we call tumbleweeds greenery...

Peace,
Serow... ;)...

Man!...
"crvn5jo" gives no clue as to who the what-what you're talkin' to... ;D...

My 98 would do that when I lived in Buckley WA, except the smoke was solid black. Moisture was pulling out the loose carbon from running way oversized jets...  looked like an ancient tractor trailer stack or hopped up late model diesel pickup on start up...  ;D
