Title: On Public Opinion Post by BalingWire on 07/29/14 at 05:53:30 Young Man. Do you really believe that mere public opinion could force a timid and peaceful man to-- Old Man. Go to war? Yes--public opinion can force some men to do ANYTHING. Y.M. ANYTHING? O.M. Yes--anything. Y.M. I don't believe that. Can it force a right-principled man to do a wrong thing? O.M. Yes. Y.M. Can it force a kind man to do a cruel thing? O.M. Yes. Y.M. Give an instance. O.M. Alexander Hamilton was a conspicuously high-principled man. He regarded dueling as wrong, and as opposed to the teachings of religion--but in deference to PUBLIC OPINION he fought a duel. He deeply loved his family, but to buy public approval he treacherously deserted them and threw his life away, ungenerously leaving them to lifelong sorrow in order that he might stand well with a foolish world. In the then condition of the public standards of honor he could not have been comfortable with the stigma upon him of having refused to fight. The teachings of religion, his devotion to his family, his kindness of heart, his high principles, all went for nothing when they stood in the way of his spiritual comfort. A man will do ANYTHING, no matter what it is, TO SECURE HIS SPIRITUAL COMFORT; and he can neither be forced nor persuaded to any act which has not that goal for its object. Hamilton's act was compelled by the inborn necessity of contenting his own spirit; in this it was like all the other acts of his life, and like all the acts of all men's lives. Do you see where the kernel of the matter lies? A man cannot be comfortable without HIS OWN approval. He will secure the largest share possible of that, at all costs, all sacrifices. Y.M. A minute ago you said Hamilton fought that duel to get PUBLIC approval. O.M. I did. By refusing to fight the duel he would have secured his family's approval and a large share of his own; but the public approval was more valuable in his eyes than all other approvals put together--in the earth or above it; to secure that would furnish him the MOST comfort of mind, the most SELF-approval; so he sacrificed all other values to get it. excerpt from What Is Man? and Other Essays (http://infomotions.com/etexts/gutenberg/dirs/7/70/70.htm) by Mark Twain 1835-1910 I hope this post meets with your approval. :D |
Title: Re: On Public Opinion Post by Paraquat on 07/29/14 at 06:19:56 There was a music group a few years ago called Flobots. Their music was mediocre, good for one listen, but they had a very powerful music video along these lines. Two friends start their journey in life and end up enemies facing each other down. They just get swept up and the next minute they don't even know how you got there and have that one second of remorse. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HLUX0y4EptA --Steve |
Title: Re: On Public Opinion Post by mpescatori on 07/30/14 at 03:43:36 In war, one of the most ancient and practiced martial arts is... psychology. It is so ancient, in fact, that it developed well before man even existed. Some animals will have horrible or threatening-looking body decorations; others, such as some lizards, will display large "wings" hidden behind their head to discourage the opponent (see "Jurassic Park"). Others will simply parade back and forth beating their chests or bellowing with mighty voices to show off their vigor. Stone age man developer face and body painting, and war masks, to frighten the enemy. Armor has a psycholiogial effect on the enemy. These days, we see psychological operations executed daily on ourselves. It is easy enough to read the news headlines on any important world event, as described by the most important news anchors of many different Countries. http://www.nytimes.com/ http://www.thetimes.co.uk/tto/news/ http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/world http://www.spiegel.de/international/ http://www.france24.com/en/france/ http://www.agi.it/en/world Browse through the headlines and you will have a grasp of what the local government considers important and what they do not want the public opinion to "worry about" ;) |

Title: Re: On Public Opinion Post by MnSpring on 07/31/14 at 18:23:30 To the people, NOT, in the USA. ‘Power” dress = Red ties, Yellow ties, Suspenders (Braces) matching. Black suit, white shirt. They are, ‘Power’ dress. They are the, ‘up and coming’, people, or the people to impress the, ‘locals’. Ya know when that level is, ‘many level above’, when people are in, blue jeans, white shirt, no tie, open collar, and a suit coat. Many years ago, a local banker, Female, (Small town), (Owner of the bank), ‘had several land lots’ which were, ’Tax forfeited by the County’. (Which the bank had lost money on by mortgaging ) The city bought them for 1.00 each. (From the County) The, ‘little’ City, wanted 15,000.00 per lot. She said: “I’ll give you 9,000.00 a lot, Right now, will write you a Bank check, Right Now”. ( I was their as her, ‘selling agent’, didn’t say a word, BUT, also had a, POWER Suit on”. ) The, City said, “Um, Well, Un, maybe, Um, let’s see, Um …” She said. (In her, ‘Power Suit” of Pants, Suit Coat, Dark Blue , small Pinstripes, RED Tie, RED Suspenders, White Shirt, and, SHINEY Black shoes and RED Socks) “OK, then You Sell Them” We didn’t get but 5 steps, towards the door, and the, ‘City’ said: “OK, we will take the check.” We sold 12 lots, at Auction for avenge of 14,000.00 a lot. It was because of the, ‘Power” suits. !!!!!!!!!! So for the people in, Italy, “Red & Yellow”, In the US, equate to, ‘Power Suits’, not to a bunch, of drunk people watching a boring game where people, kick a little ball back and forth. |

Title: Re: On Public Opinion Post by mpescatori on 08/01/14 at 10:04:18 OK, now I understand I've been going to work in a "power suit" all my life. But going back to "Public Opinion", here's a (catholic) joke my FiL shared with me. "The Pastor's Ass" The Pastor entered his donkey in a race and it won !! The Pastor was so pleased with the donkey that he entered it in the next race, and it won that race too. The local paper read: PASTOR'S ASS OUT FRONT. The Bishop was so upset with this kind of publicity that he ordered the Pastor not to enter the donkey in any other races. The next day the local paper headline read: “BISHOP SCRATCHES PASTOR'S ASS”. This was too much for the Bishop, so he ordered the Pastor to get rid of the donkey. The Pastor decided to give it to a Nun in a nearby convent. The local paper, hearing of the news, posted the following headline the next day: NUN HAS BEST ASS IN TOWN!! The Bishop fainted …. He informed the Nun that she would have to get rid of the donkey as soon as possible. So she sold it to a local farmer for $10. The next day the paper read: “NUN SELLS ASS FOR $10”. This was too much for the Bishop so he ordered the Nun to buy back the donkey, and take it to the plains where it could run wild. The next day the headlines read: NUN ANNOUNCES HER ASS IS WILD AND FREE. The Bishop was buried the next day. The moral of the story is ... being too concerned about public opinion can bring you much grief and misery, even shorten your life. So be yourself and enjoy life. Stop worrying about everyone else's ass and you'll be a lot happier and live longer! Have a nice day and a laugh |
