Title: Idle Mix Plug Removal Question
Post by Silverhippi on 07/25/14 at 11:30:06

Hello again,

So, I installed a cheap JPCycles, shorty, slashcut muffler that is obnoxiously loud. I had the baffle professionally re-packed and the carb re-jetted and bike runs great with no backfiring which amazed me. A few days ago I put in a K&N filter in the stock airbox. Now I am getting some mild/sporadic backfires when decelerating. Decided I needed to work up the courage to drill a hole in my carburetor. Before I drill, I wanted to check with the experts because I believe one of the former owners may have already performed this mod. Please see the PhonePhoto below. I think what I am seeing is the head of a brass, standard screw and not the plug.

Any feedback is welcome!

Thank you sir!

Now I'll read up on which way to turn it.

CW is leaner, CCW is richer...
Don't tighten it down...but, count how many turns from where it is currently set, to closed... (CW is closing)... then, come back and adjust...
...if you need to be more than 3 turns out from closed,.. you should go one up on the pilot jet...

I am definitely new to being a motorcycle mechanic, if turning one screw counts as a mechanic.

I checked and my screw was five turns out from closed. I set it to three turns out. It cranked right up and I just drove it around the yard and revved the engine a bit. No noticeable backfires. I'll give it a run tomorrow and see how it is working.

Thanks for the help!

Previous owner of my bike must have done the same thing. No plug on the mixture screw. My problem was the screw would back out on it's own. I'd adjust it the way I wanted it and a couple of days later it would be backed out again. I finally adjusted it the way I wanted and put a small drop of fingernail polish at the edge to keep it from unscrewing.

Thanks for the suggestion no the fingernail polish...it did seem to turn very easily on mine as well.
