I'm getting prepared to remove the head cover and in this posting:

Dave mentions that I should replace the rubber seals for the valve inspection covers, the o-ring for the oil galley, sealing washers for the bolts and a rubber plug for he cam boring hole.

Is this true? I've read several threads on the topic, but only saw these parts mentioned once. Any further information on the matter is appreciated. Thanks.

Not everyone replaces every seal.

the cam bore plug and the sealing washers you can reuse unless damaged or already leaking.

I've never had any trouble with the cam bore plug. coat it with rtv and it's fine.

Most of the sealing washers can be replaced if leaking later. All but the top center one. I apply rtv around every bolt hole in the cover, so maybe that's why I don't have trouble with them.

The head bolt plug, many get more than 1 use out of it, but must be coated with rtv.

The valve inspection cover seals (o-rings) cam be replaced any time if leaking.

The oil galley o-ring (figure 8 ring if you buy a OEM kit) should be replaced every time.

Having all new just means you probably won't have to mess with it till the next time you remove the head cover.

I had it apart 3times. Never replaced anything but a few bolt sealing washers.

When you take it apart to you leave the engine in the frame?

Yes, you can leave the engine in the frame. There isn't much room to remove the headcover. But if you hold your mouth just right, moving it this-a-way and then that-a-way, it does come off.

When you re-install the head cover, practice how it goes back on before you apply RTV sealant. Then apply the RTV, and reinstall the head cover with confidence that you can do it without smearing sealant all over the place.

You never told us what year your bike is.....but O-rings in the head do get hard and brittle over time.

The Valve cover O-rings are $ 2.93 each, the other O-ring is $ 1.57, and the washer for the head cover bolts are either $ !.57 each or $ 1.57 for a pack of 5....not sure as the parts list online is confusing on that price issue.

Just seems to be $ 10 - $ 15 well spent to me.....I hate leaks!

I never pulled the head,just the cover,and engine stayed in. I used all thread shoved through the peg mount holes to keep the motor up.

Depends. My local Honda/Suzuki dealer knows my name and face (painful), and they trust when I order stuff over the phone I will come pick it up when it comes in. Like most dealers they stock only the common things - and O-rings and gaskets will have to be ordered. It takes just about a week, and for most parts they are a bit more expensive as I have to pay tax.

For online purchases I use Bike Bandit as I get a 10% AMA discount. Motorcycle Superstore used to be a good supplier...then when they opened a KY outlet they started charging me Sales Tax so I don't buy from them anymore. Ron Ayers is good but their website is a bit more confusing than some of the others. J.C Motors is the best place to buy Progressive shocks and some other products. There are plenty of online suppliers.
