Hello, I have a '95 Suzuki Savage 650. Whenever the bike is at idle or low end RPM's, I can hear a ticking noise coming from the top end of the engine.
Yesterday I adjusted my valves for the first time, and it's been quite a while that I'm aware of that they were touched.

Slapped the tank loosely back on for a test; either worse or same as before.

The rockers seemed to be unusually tight before adjusting. I've also messed with the decomp cable after checking my Clymers.

Any tips or suggestions?
It's been embarrassing for quite a while now.

Edit: I also took a video of the problem, and have tried to isolate the whereabouts with a flathead screwdriver 'stethoscope' with the only difference in a higher pitched tone from the lower knocks.

1st be aware of the Clymer error, don't rotate your engine CW to adjust the valves, rotate in the same direction the wheels rotate when going forward. This will result in using the wrong TDC and your valves will be too loose.

2nd, the engine is noisy, get used to it. ;)

Sounds like a loose cam chain to me. I think I can hear it scraping when you put the camera near the bottom of the engine.

What's the mileage on the bike? If it is over 8K you are probably looking at a cam chain tensioner replacement.

yup, cam chain. noisy at the bottom.
put your hand on the cover behind the oil filter cover and see if you feel it tapping.

Hey guys, finally gained enough to go outside and get that crank case off. These are my findings.

I'm guessing this is the infamous 18mm everyone's talking about. Is the double hole adjuster posted earlier a modification?

yep, looks like it's time.

measure from the aluminum housing to the end of the cylinder that goes into it.

I measured 19mm. Is there a non-welding fix to this? I assume my chain has simply stretched over 38k miles of neglect. (My father was previous owner) :-/

if you got 38k miles, that's pretty good.
he musta like going for long trips.

you either have to replace the chain, and maybe the guides
or get one of these...

The first hole is good for 10-15k miles. How many miles until you need to swap to the 2nd hole?

Deffo Verslavy,just got mine back and he does excellent work and the cost will pay for itself eventually which is all good to me ( cost of chain - $75 not having to perform surgery to replace chain - priceless ) :)
