Title: what is this?

On my 96 savage on the left side of the engine (if you're sitting on the bike) there is a cable that goes into the head. What is that? It has like a cable adjuster on it. Just curious thanks

Decompression valve. There is a solenoid under the gas tank, with a cable running down to a lever that partially opens the exhaust valves during starting so the starter can crank the engine over easier.

Good pictures and explanation of the whole decompression system here:

If that's out of adjustment will it make noise near there while the bike is running? Like a ticking/knocking sound?

See which way the spring is pushing it?  Push it and see if the noise changes when you do. Look at it,is the cable tight? Feel of it. Is it delivering a vibration, like it's getting tapped on?

I'll check tomorrow after I get home from work. I'm hoping that's what it is since I can't figure out where else the noise could be coming from

Yes, if it's too tight it can cause the rocker to hit the decomp cam.

That cable needs to be pretty loose.
