Title:  Squeaky Belt?
Post by MnSpring on 07/11/14 at 10:19:48

OK, So I looked and read, on the
"Table of Contents with links".

And found, Rear belt Pulley wobble, About 1/8 - 1/16"
Seemed no one was concerned.
Several recommendations on, 'stuff' to put on the belt,
and one, bevel the edges.  But nothing defenitive.

Mine, did Not Squeak, until after I had a new rear tire installed.
I happened to be their, just as he was finishing up, and checked the belt, It was tighter than before.  So I had him, back it off a bit,
to what I thought was a, 'little' looser, than before.
(the 90 with thumb & forefinger)

So I ask, a opinion, of those who have dealt with this MANY times before.
To Loose?   To Tight?   Or out of alinement?

Spinning the wheel, it, 'looks' like it is true.
And no squeak, on Acceleration,
only on Deceleration, or clutch in.

Suggestions on things to check, or do?

Disclaimer: I am not an expert.

I think there is a little wobble in the rear pulley, it has rubber bumper things inside the hub, I am guessing to absorb some of the shock from the road, belt, engine, and so forth. I am guessing that play is normal.

My 06 had a belt squeak, like you said not all the time, can't remember exactly when it was. The 90* thing with the thumb and forefinger sounds about right. When I changed my tire, while i had the back end up in the air, I just adjusted my belt so it ran right in the middle of the rear pulley. Tightened one side, then the other, loosened one side, whatever until it was right in the middle and that was the end of my squeak.

I am sure someone else will chime in, but that's about all I got. I hope it helps.

Was that spinning the wheel both ways?

One other fella found his hub and pulley were too loose.
there's a internal pin and socket that centers the pulley on the hub.

But since this happened after the last work done... prob'ly put back together wrong.

I don't understand the "90" with thumb and forefinger. How much play should the belt have? 1/2in. 1/4in.....?

This is a different method than the standard chain play measurement.

grip the belt at the lowest point in the middle between the 2 pulleys.
pull with your fingers and push with your thumb to twist the belt 90°
the nail bed of your thumb should turn white.
if you cant get 90° it's too tight, if you get more... too loose.
