Title: still have noise?
Post by shakenbake94 on 07/07/14 at 15:42:53

I just received my versy tensioner today I put it in and put oil in it. When I started it it still had some noise. Not as much as I had before but there's still some noise. Is this normal? Does anybody have advice or ideas? Maybe its supposed to sound like that I haven't heard a savage run other than mine so maybe its supposed to sound like that?

If it sounds more or less like this one it's probably OK. I think this is normal for a completly stock bike.

How many miles on your bike?  Might be time to check the valve adjustment.

Has your bike always been yours....and always had good oil in it?

If the bike had oil without adequate ZDDP....the cam and rockers can get worn and will get noisy.

This is the beginning of the damage to the cam from a bike run with a marginal oil.  This bike had 17,000 miles on it when it was taken apart after a broken starter gear took out the cases.

No I picked it up cheap about 2 months ago. Was told it was blown up and it didn't run. Put a raptor petcock in it and starts right up. Just put a versy tensioner in it and changed the oil. Runs like a CHAMP other than the noise. Was told the guy who owned it rode very easy and never beat on it or anything.

Not sure about oil quality. When I put it back together a week ago I used castrol gtx 10-40. Noise is at the top of the engine. When I checked the valve clearance they were at the high end of spec. Will that make it noisey?

Better a bit too loose than too tight, even with a little noise. Add some Redline ZDDP to that Castrol. The bike needs zinc for the long haul.

Check to see if the speedo is making the noise. The first time I heard mine I thought I broke something in the engine and was ready to tear it down.  Press down firmly on the speedo and see if it goes away.  I believe I also read here that if the engine mount bolts are loose, you will also have noise.

I'll try that thanks. But the sound gets faster when I accelerate. Im not sure its the speedo but definitely worth a shot

Man,dump the fancy oil. Toss Rotella T15/40 in.Keep the filter.See if it doesn't sound better. You'll save money with Rotella,$13.00 a gallon..it's good enough to keep big diesel engines alive forever...

Got home and decided to check my valves again. They were way too tight. Couldn't even get a .003 feeler in at all. So I guess it is my valves got dark on me so I'll be adjusting them tomorrow

You can't check them hot, the clearances will be different.
check cold, 1st thing in the morning.

Don't look in the car oils, it is shelved next to the gallon jugs of diesel oils .....  over there where the HEAVY DUTY OILS go.

Mine sounds a tiny bit quieter than the bike in the video and i was starting to worry about noise issue!

pheww. I did just get the valves adjusted professionally by a good and trusty custom builder I know. Don't think I could've undertaken that.

I did what you suggested I put rotella 15-40 in and it did get a little quieter but I did adjust my valves and it sounds a whole lot better than before. You can still hear the valves chattering but I've come to realize that this motor is a noisy motor
