Title: Clamp for Harley muffler
Post by Srotag on 07/06/14 at 10:09:08

Ok...new guy here BUT...I have read ALL the muffler changeovers, AND did the search AND looked at pictures that would load.

Which clamp actually works the best?  Only want to do this once. Pop for a wide HD clamp??  Stock Suzi ??  Auto clamp mounted sideways??

Simple question, but dumb if not asked...not interested in reinventing the wheel.

Thanks  :)

The Harley clamp is well made and very sturdy.  They can often be found for a few bucks on Ebay.

Go to a few harley repair shops and ask. They usually have them lying around.. that is how I got my FREE dyna muffler and other parts.

Autozone exhaust pipe clamp $3.00 I don't remember the exact size but it was smaller than 2" and larger than 1 1/2". Buy a couple of sizes and return the one that doesnt fit. Not the best looking clamp but funtional.

I never found the right clamp at Auto Zone. I had to go to Amazon.

Amazon has these.... someone will have to tell you the size you need, as I got my clamp from HD dealer (I know the parts guy).

Industrial supply, ask for a T-clamp.  If they don't have it ,ask where they'd look.  I ran a warehouse. I learned a lot about finding things.

Old_rider:
I don't think that's quite right.  Isn't the clamp 1.5"?  You're link is 1.75".  I may be wrong.

The inside diameter of the Harley Dyna muffler is 1-3/4" (1.75").  So the clamp that fits over the muffler needs to be big enough to account for the  1.75" plus the thickness of the metal on the Dyna muffler.

Thanks Dave.  I don't know why I was thinking 1.5".

For my application 1 5/8" exhaust clamp from autozone worked but I did have to cut a few slots in the muffler adapter pipe with a hacksaw for a compression fit. Fishtail torpedo muffler that some one had welded an adapter pipe to.
