Title: 2014 S40 has fuel light?
Post by youzguyz on 07/02/14 at 14:04:51

Has anybody out there got a 2014 S40?

I just read a post on another forum that it has a low fuel light.  It uses the previously unused light by the neutral indicator.

I don't think so...

That would be nice...not that I would ever notice it though.

Low fuel light would mean there is a sending unit. Would mean gas gauge either on it or in the works.

Anybody heard any rumors?

The new owner in question now believes it is NOT a low fuel light.
Mention of such a feature is no where to be found in the owners manual.

The response from the owner:
I'm starting to believe mine doesn't actually have a gas light. The salesman told me it did and now I've checked the owners manual and it is not saying it had one. The light he pointed to isn't listed in the manual.

I don't think it'll get such a light until it becomes injected.

For a year (maybe a couple of years) early models had a light that came on when the sidestand was down. Right  next to the neutral light at the bottom of the speedo housing. The empty spot is still there but there is no light in it. That's what the salesman was probably pointing to.  ::)

Just checked the wiring diagrams - only '86 models had that sidestand light

My FI Sporty has a fuel light... It comes on somewhere between 80 and 160 miles... depending on the day of the week and the phase of the moon...
...usually around 160... but don't count on it... :-?...

Motorcycle fuel lights or level indicators are never very good,.. because the small amount of fuel gets sloshed around, and tilted so much...
They're better than nothin'... but not much...

Even my car (Geo Metro) only has an 8 gallon tank... when I turn hard left or right, I can watch the fuel gauge add or subtract a quarter tank...
;D ;D ;D...

Geez, 8 gallons!?!?  That sounds small even for a Metro.  I guess with 200 mpg you don't need a big tank!

There was a rumor a few years ago that the S40 was getting fuel injection.  Add that to the low fuel light rumor.

My Ducati has a low fuel light that works off pressure in the tank. The idea is that a higher ratio of 'air gas' to 'liquid gas' means increased pressure and therefore low fuel=light comes on. Not bad, in theory. In practice.............well,  it's like Serrow said. Not acurate at all.

Guess what happens when a FULL tank of gas in a black tank sits in the sun a few minutes.  Yep, increased pressure. I've had that dam light come on 9 miles after a fill up..       Worthless.

At least yours comes on. My wife's Monster's does work occasionally but it's run out a couple of times because she didn't pay attention to the odometer. I guess that's the price of having a yellow fuel tank.

My '13 doesn't have a light.

All that Hi-Tech and still no trip odometer. Hmmm.

I've heard that the 15' models will come with a 3-digit luggage lock, zip tied to the bars...
;D...

I learned on Sunday, at about 60 mph, that the main tank will get me about 108 miles (with a lot of start and stop.) I didn't push the reserve.

And that is the reason.....we suggest you stop every 100 miles to buy gas. ;D

Exactly, Dave. I got caught in the middle of nowhere.
