Title: Oil
Post by Jim396 on 07/01/14 at 21:42:35

Hi Everyone!

This is my first question/post, be easy on me.

I've been using the Suzuki 4-cycle oil for the last 5k miles in my 2011. I live in north Mississippi, where it stays nice and hot. The shop did not have any today. I went to Walmart and bought " Valvoline ATV 10W-40 4 stroke oil". It meets the owners manual requirements with the exception of "JASO T 903", which is a clutch and transmission lubricant.

What do you think, should I use it or not?

Thank you,
Jim396

I have seen the list of the 4 oils, did not see them at Walmart. I made a purchase, but I think I've made a mistake.

I'm going to look again when I take this oil back. If not I will go into Memphis and look. Traffic is horrible up there, alot different than the pastures and cotton fields I'm used to.

Just finished cleaning my bike, (I use Pledge), and I took the plug out of the little tube by the battery vent tube. Nasty oil stuff came out. Thanks for the tip!

Rottella is available at Walmart, K-Mart, all auto stores, Tractor Supply, and most truck stops.

Should be easy to find, and often is on sale.

Tractor Supply has it. 15/40. About $13.00/ gallon.

Success! Mobile 1 Racing 4T 10W-40 is my new oil of choice. $9.97 at Walmart.

Thanks guys!

Jim, what part of Ms are you in?  I'm ~30-45 minutes N of you.

Like Verslagen said, Rotella T or T6 is the oil of choice around here.  It has close to the proper amount of zinc (ZDDP) already in it.  Check out the ZDDP thread in the tech section.  Zinc lubes your cam and keeps it happy.  There's no bearings around the cam.  It rides on the soft aluminum head.  The zinc will prevent premature wear.

If it has friction modifiers it will slip the clutch.

You will probably want to add some Redline ZDDP to that oil. The issue is, we have an "old style" engine with flat tappets and "old technology" that requires zinc additive to reduce wear. I was listening to a local car talk show recently with a forensic oil chemistry lab guy and he was talking about how older cars (and bikes) need at least 1200ppm zinc otherwise the tappets and cams wear out prematurely even with the new oils because the new oils aren't designed for older engines. You can get Redline from Amazon.

I HAD to get Redline from Amazon.  None of the local stores sell it.  Well, MAYBE a motorcycle shop, but not WalMart or any of the usual auto parts places.

Check boat shops.

Check Wallmart again...  it's usually sold by the gallon, not quarts... (big plastic jug...)... ;)...

Horn Lake? I work in Whitehaven on US-51, working 1500-2300 today and tomorrow, I'll be a mile south of Graceland, opposite side of the road. Look for the black Savage cable locked to a bicycle rack. I normally live in Rosemark TN, not far from Kris01, or very infrequently in Bay Saint Louis MS, on one of the canals by the hospital.

I run straight 30W in my 2003. Commute 72 miles a day on it from one end of Shelby County to the other. Tried T6, for one day, bike sounded like a 2 stroke falling down a rocky cliff. Tried regular 15W40 Rotella, quieter, but still a very noisy top end. Ran 20W50, too thin as well. Straight 30W in mine has eliminated the need to stop halfway on each leg of the trip and let the engine cool off. Still stop, good excuse to stretch my fingers, uncramp my palms (need different grips) and have a smoke.

Life in the Mid South is rough for aircooled engines. High heat, high humidity, low oil life span, bad fuel unless you go to a no ethanol station...

I'm off Saturday July 5th. Have to swap the rear tire on my bike in the morning (got a year out of it, mileage unknown, bike was Pine's when we installed the current one). Will be home the rest of the day. Be happy to go over your bike if you'd like to ride up. 2 road miles from where TN14 meets Atoka-Idaville/Beaver Creek Rd. If it isn't raining, bring crickets/minnows, a fishing pole and a sack of cherry bombs... have the family (if applicable) follow you up, have four small boats and a badly overstocked 2 acre pond.

Kris, that goes double for you...

I'll even suspend the "No full face helmets allowed" rule for the day.

Sounds good Serious Thumper, will have to take you up on that soon. This is a very busy weekend. I deal at the Fitz Casino (nights). My days off are Monday and Tuesday. Fireworks Friday! Come look for me if you want. I'm a little bald guy pushing 50, just go to the tables and ask, "Wheres Jim"?

Thanks for the oil info. It does get hot. Not suprised you use 30.

;D

Thanks for the invite!  Not sure I'll have time this weekend.  I've got family coming out of the woodwork wanting to get together this weekend and go out of town.  I heard Nashville mentioned.

Yeah, I'm wondering about my 110+ Phoenix weather. What 30W do you run and do you add Redline to it?

You know WD, now that you mention it, my bike is a little noisy.  I'm thinking maybe a thicker oil would quiet it down some and help with heat dissipation.  I'm running Rotella 15w-40 right now and may go with a 30w oil if I can find some that's compatible.

Have you checked the valves?

Yep, in spec. This makes 2 Savages for me with a noisy top end even when in spec if I run a light weight oil. It's the climate.

As to the 30W, whatever is on sale. Had to add a pint last night before I rode home. Holiday weekend traffic jams, bike got hot heading to work.
