Title: Has any one ever seen carb gunk this bad?
Post by brianho2112 on 07/01/14 at 20:38:44

This bike has just hit the 20k mile mark, and I've owned it for only the last 600 or so. Just today after I put in a modded tensioner, I thought to myself "why not break open the carbs for poops and giggles?". My reaction involved almost poop, and no giggles.

Jeezy petes, I've never seen corrosion that bad from fuel. Can anyone tell me what exactly that yellow power is at the bottom?

The good news is that everything cleaned up quite nicely. However, would it be beneficial to still rebuild?

Yep, that's caused by the ethanol in the gas.  :-/  A rebuild would depend on the condition of the rubber parts

For the most part, the diaphragm and the rubber parts are decent. My float seems to be a bit unphotogenic, but it seems to function properly.

The curse of corn squeezin's.  And just think of what King Corn is doing to the insides of your pancreas (Type II diabetes) and liver (non-alcoholic fatty liver disease) from the HFCS that is in everything. I mean everything.

In order to avoid this kind of gook.....I turn off my petcock about half a mile from my house.  By the time I get to my driveway the carb float bowl is mostly empty and the bike stops running.  With little fuel in the carb, there is little ethanol to react with the aluminum.

A bit over the top.......but it does help me avoid ethanol issues.

Other than looking nasty, what kind of problems could the ethanol cause in the long term?

Check around.   It may be worthwhile to find a station, which sells,   NON Oxy  Gas.   Then fill  the portable tanks, and fill at home !

When at the gas station, with your, 'tanks' put, 1/2" gal of non-Oxy gas in your cage, that way you know the Hose is filled with, Non-Oxy,  then fill your portable tanks.

If you can do this, Better MPG,  Better Performance, and Less 'Crap' in the carb.

Wish I could find the photo I posted of two 1931 model cars filling up with Corn Alcohol Gasoline, bringing prosperity to the corn belt. Even the pumps had corn cobs on top of them

Funny you should bring this up. I recently procured a 1969 cb160 that had a leaking float bowl gasket. I thought it odd to be leaking from there while sitting static in the garage, since the float level should be about 3/4" below that level, so I opened 'er up and here's what I found.

(forgive the blurry cell phone pic)

All that gunk actually "glued" the float to the bottom of the bowl, so the needle valve never shut off. And what with the overflow also gunked up, all the extra fuel was making it's way past the bowl gasket.

She runs much better without a bowl full of poo.
