Title: Vacation Fun
Post by Greg on 06/29/14 at 13:13:20

5.5 hours from home my scooter takes a crap. Melted wires from tail light to headlight. Fun times!

YIKES! Any idea what caused it?

Replaced the tail light bulb with one that wasn't exactly the same. Only .5 amp more draw. Don't know if that's why though. Had the seat and tank off a few times. Maybe pinched a wire. Hot weather and hours on the highway? Your guess is as good as mine.

At least it has company at the towing yard.

I had an LED tailight short out on the circuitboard and it burnt all the wirng from the rear fender, to under the seat... up to the tank...

I was sitting at a traffic light and smelled smoke... looked down and smoke was coming up from the seat...
;D ;D ;D...

Not a huge LED fan any more.., :-?...

PS.. nicest looking tow yard I ever saw...

That's a really bad piece of luck!  Strange thing is that it looks more like melted solder than it does burnt wiring.  Do you have stock tail light and turn signals?

It's a Savage, they do that occasionally. JA Pan Inc copied the old British motorcycle industry a little too well... >:(

In the just shy of 4K in less than 2.5 months I've had mine, it has gotten quirky. Haunted headlight, massive oil leaks, both sets of brakes are in dire need of replacement, cam whir, melted a turn signal lens (bulb got HOT)...

You ride them, you fix them, you repeat.

The Savage/S40 is as close as you'll find these days to a late 50s or early 60s racing single. They are kind of like recently graduated high school age girls, cute and quirky, with issues.  ;D

Really?   Interesting.
I have been a fan of LED's for a long time, and put them in many applications. (12 Vdc  & 120Vac).  Just put in one of the new, tail light 1157's in my S-40.
The problem I had,  (all ac related), Very short life,  Dim/Bright/Dim/Bright, or flash on/off.

Never had any trouble in DC apps.

Another thing to keep an eye on?

Anybody else have trouble with LED's in MC's  ?

I just got home from this whole escapade. By the time I factor in the extra night in a hotel truck rental fuel towing cost etc. I ended up spending $700 to get that lump of crap home. And the wire that burn burn from the tail light to the headlight and it melted the insulation on other wires near it so its going to be a lot of work.

it was interesting though. I had a guy with his little boy in a pickup truck stop to see if I was OK when I was on the side of the road. I had a guy riding a BMW motorcycle stop. All the Harleys kept going of course. And one of the Japanese bikes had a girl passenger rubbernecking and started laughing at me. That really pissed me off.

Reveals the character of some people really. You may be better off buying a whole harness from ebay.

Electricity is to machinery what alcohol is to Homer.

I am going to finish tearing it apart before I decide to repair or replace.
