Title: Cam chain
Post by GrowlingSavage on 06/26/14 at 07:40:35

What's going on fellow savages. I'm new to a 1996 Savage. After 3 weeks of riding the cam chain tensioner called out to me. I have the clutch cover off . The plunger was completely out of the housing. Anyway, I want to measure the chain. How do I remove it after having the cover off?

Check the tech section for complete instructions...

but it requires you remove the head cover and then cam.

look under engine, then I think it's the 1st couple of threads.

You don't need to measure it, it is 1 to 2 pin diameters longer than it was new -- not much, in other words.

Put a 'slaggy on it and run it until it is hitting itself in the middle and then (and only then) will it be even begin approaching the manufacturer's wear limits.

Our cam chain tension system isn't the best in the world, I am afraid.

Thanks for the response guys. Ok, That makes sense. There is an 11-12 mm gap before the chains rubs against itself.

Do you know where to get a Verslasgen modified tensioner?
