I just recently purchased a 2004 Savage LS650 with 2840 miles on it. I've been experiencing a fairly consistent problem with it backfiring when the choke is off. Doesn't seem to do it at all when the choke is on. The backfiring occurs when I'm down shifting and the engine revs without any throttle applied. The bike had only about 200 miles on it from the last couple years so the gas may be old (not sure). I've put new gas with an engine cleaner in and it's just starting to make its way through the system. Hopefully it helps but wondering if anyone here has any ideas about fixing the backfiring issue. Welcome to the Savage. They backfire. Period. You can chase it, or you can embrace it. Tune it to run, not to stop or sound good. :)

I am sure the guys are getting tired of saying this so i will lol Look into Adjusting the idle mixture screw, there is a brass plug over the screw that needs to come off my screw was set to 1.5 turns out i turned it to 1 3/4 turns out and it seems fine (i also did the white washer mod and took .5 mm off the 2.5 mm washer to make it run a bit richer) Suzuki has the bikes running "lean" from the factory which causes some backfiring at times. Like sp said you cant really eliminate backfiring on these bikes mine still does the little crackle when gearing down or bliping the throttle but i have no big backfires. If your bike seems to run good and isn't bogging etc then its likely running normally.

PS all of the info I talked about can be found here on this site or by typing in the info you want on google usually suzukisavage.com will come up in google its the best places for specific moto info i have ever been on. good luck

Indeed, this is an awesome place for info. There are tons of old threads on carb mods and backfiring. Start with the basics: Idle screw, then perhaps re-jetting and white washer mod if necessary. If you plan on changing the exhaust and air filter set up, do the carb and that stuff all at once because they change the carb settings. So, ride it for a while and check out the forum for builds and mods until you get "mod fever", then jump in. The backfire isn't hurting anything. If it REALLY bugs you on shut down, pull out the choke and hit the kill switch, it will die silently. Don't forget to push the choke back in. :)

I appreciate all the responses. Kind of relieving to know that it is normal for the Savage to backfire. It otherwise seems to be running good.

This is only halfway related to the backfire issue, so please excuse another newb. I've adjusted the pilot screw to where it is only backfiring at shutdown (i.e. hit the kill switch and one half to one second later...BAM!) I'm ok with that, my question is that now my bike doesn't need choke to get started in the morning. On the contrary if I try to start it cold on choke, The bike will sputter, take choke off runs better.....Did I over richen the mixture? should I lean it back out some?

Depends on how cold it is where you are,... Lucky...
... but, if your bike doesn't need a little choke when the engine is cold,.. it is going to be a bit rich when it's warm...
This will waste a bit of gas... Some folks don't care, but I like to have good mpg's as well a good performance...

Give leaning it out a little a try,... you can always go back, or find a happy medium...

I've discovered if I pull the choke out then hit the kill switch on shut down it doesn't backfire. You just have to remember to push the choke back in and re-set the kill switch... ask me how I know. ;)

Great idea shutting down with the choke! Hasn't backfired onced since trying that. Thank you. leaning out mixtire just a little bit. Should be good to go.
