Title: Alternator trouble?
Post by Chipop73 on 06/20/14 at 14:41:02

Rode my Savage to work ok....at the end of my shift, 12 hrs, battery was dead. Jumped it off and rode home, ( 17 miles). Put the battery on a charger over night. Cranked it up and rode to work this morning...went out and checked it after about 8 hours....dead...will jump start but cannot run without being hooked up to booster. Going to truck it home tonight.
Does it sound like the alternator has given up?

three possibilities...

dead bat, pull the bat, have someone test it.

disconnected rectumfryer, check the cables running to it.

burnt out stator, pull the connector to the rect... run the bike up to 4000? rpm output should be 100v ac for all three circuits.

At the least, your battery is dead... How old is it?...
Is it a wet cell?... have you checked the water?...
Check battery connections and ground strap to engine...
...are you sure you're turning the ignition to "off"  and not "park"?...

Battery is 4 months old. Will not assume it is good...will be testing it with load tester after I deep charge it.
I need to learn where the rectumfrier is, and check the stator.
No days off for 2 more weeks....difficult to work on bike after work because, at my age, I need my sleep!!
Thank you all for your advise.

Oh...and yes....I am sure I am switching to off, not park....did that one time shortly after I purchased my 650.
