I have brought a replacement right hand control and the wires that connect to the brake switch are very different.

So I can safely cut the wires off the new control unit that lead to the break switch and reattach the old brake switch wires?
I hope im making sense. :-[

If I were you, I'd keep the new control as is, in case you go to the newer lever.  The newer switch is better, easier to replace.

I'd cut off the old switch leads, put blade connectors on them, and plug them in.

Very sorry everyone I haven't displayed the pics very well and im struggling to explain myself too.
The first pic is my old right hand control and the 2 little wires that go to the front hand brake work in a sliding motion. when I pull the front hand brake a piece of metal closes the circuit. Its primitive but it works.
The new control unit which is the second pic works in a different way. So my reason for asking about the year was so I could source what ever else I need to use the new controls. However for me to do this I would have to replace the fluid reservoir and hand brake lever etc. This could prove to be very expensive :-[.http://i1300.photobucket.com/albums/ag91/PaulMarshall1977/Brake_Lever_3_zps6bb22054.jpg
