Title: Removing Belt Guard?
Post by psutton on 06/19/14 at 11:59:39

I'm removing the belt guard here in the next day or two. My question is about the spring. Will it expand if I take it off? How do I go about this? Or should I grind off a section of the spacer? Will I have to take off the rear tire for all of this? Any one with experience in this would help me out a ton! Thanks.

Shock won't jump out or explode when you take it off... it may be a little snug to slide off the mount... (if it is, just give a little pull upward on the back end of the bike)...
If you only pull one,.. there is no danger the rear of the bike collapsing either...

...but,... you don't really need to remove it, to remove the belt guard...
(That mounting tab, under the shock mount, is a slotted one, not an enclosed hole,.. just loosen the shock bolt, and you can pull the guard out from there)...
Once the front, and middle attachment points are also removed,.. just wiggle and jiggle that thing out from the rear...

Pulling the one shock will make that part easier... :-?...

Leave the tire on... (the bike looks funny without it)...

There always seems to be a slight difference in length between the 2 shocks and when you take 1 off, the other 1 will set a little more.
if you have a floor jack, slightly raising the back under the muffler bracket will take the weight off the shock and make it easier to remove.
and yeah it will take a slight pop to get it off.

Last time I took the guard off, it didn't wanna... took a good smack under the end to pop it loose.

You might also find one very tight Phillips/JASO head screw.

I got it all squared away! Thanks guys! The shock came off and on very easily. The most trouble I had was getting the tire off so I could get the spacer on the bolt. All together it probably took me 40 minutes to accomplish everything. Thanks for all your input!  :)
