Title: Tensioner change happiness, but ..... Post by JRLeathercraft on 06/17/14 at 18:24:29 Today I changed the chain tensioner thanks to Versy. The hardest part was the little spring clip. It bounced about 20 feet away and yet by the Grace of God I manged to find it. The original plunger had a toothpick's width left on it. Amazing. Now, I replaced the gasket and put a thin layer of gasket sealant but it's leaking on the bottom. I used a torque wrench and never got to 10-ft lbs as they were feeling snug but I started to sense they were getting tight. My wrench is 1/2 inch drive that I had to convert down to 1/4. They still could turn but I was getting weary. Is it possible to over-tighten the bolts on the cover? Should I give them a little more turn? thank you, Jay |

Yes, I think 8 lbs of pressure is enough. Go around in a circle a gently snug them up. Maybe 1/4 turns, probably 1/8th. Use a 1/4 drive as well. |
Title: Re: Tensioner change happiness, but ..... Post by JRLeathercraft on 06/17/14 at 18:58:01 I did a start pattern to snug them, like on a wheel of a car. Then I did a star pattern again to tighten. I thought it would be best to do it that way vs. getting it uneven. Is this correct? Jay |
Title: Re: Tensioner change happiness, but ..... Post by pgambr on 06/17/14 at 19:10:11 That should be fine. It's better to leak a bit of oil than try to dig out whatever is left when it breaks. |

That would be correct. I took a look at the manual, there appears there are three "special washer" that belong under three particular bolts. If there are not installed, it will leak oil. |

PLayin with fire,,Use an end wrench or 1/4" ratchet. A torque wrench set at the low end or high end of the scale isnt to be trusted. Trust your hand & experience. Sounds like you chose good sense over "I HAVE to make it stop leaking". |
Title: Re: Tensioner change happiness, but ..... Post by JRLeathercraft on 06/18/14 at 15:27:13 The special washers were stuck to the cover. I saw them, but the didn't come off. I'm not sure what to do. I may have gotten it too tight. Maybe I have to do the gasket all over again? Oh brother, another round of draining oil and muffler removal and cover removal. Thanks for all the help. Jay |

If the bolt is not stripped out then I don't think having to too tight would cause a leak unless you cranked each bolt down full force without going around and around tightening them a little at a time. The big question is, how bad is it leaking? If it is just a few drops overnight, I'd say live with it until you need to do some other repair. A half a teaspoon of oil a day... you'll blow that much through the engine riding on the freeway. ;) |
