Here is a link to a tuning video about Drag Pipes, and in one of the tests they use a thumb screws which is similar lollipop insert without the hole.

Test showed a mid range power loss with the open pipes and the insert.

Yea as Dave touched upon I believe if you are set on running straight pipes the best options are baffles or the cone style inserts over an old school lollipop.
