Title: What are the symptoms of too tight valves?
Post by Greg on 06/14/14 at 09:15:45

I am just wondering. From what I read if valves are adjusted too tight, they never close completely and burn. Are there any sounds or feeling that they are too tight? I adjusted mine and the engine quieted down and it seems to run fine. I always have a sort of "buyer's remorse" with most everything I do. So now I am concerned they are too tight or I didn't tighten the jam nut enough and the adjustment will get way outta whack  on my trip to Boston. :-)

Toooooo tight and you'll have zero compression...

Just too tight,.. and you could burn a valve... (the exhaust valve needs contact with the head to dissipate heat)...

A little loose is better than a little tight...

Perfect is best... (duhhh!)...  ;D...

I'm sure you set them properly, relax it will be fine..

sometimes if your valves are too tight, the hot engine will lose some power due to reduced compression. If you know your bike real well, you might notice the drop in power before damage is done.

serowbot is correct, loose is better than too tight

I still hear some ticking, it's just a lot quieter. I doubt they're too tight. I just think of this crap when I can't sleep and worry needlessly. :-)

That description is very similar to mine.  I hoped to get rid of the ticking sound, but JOG is probably right.  If I tightened mine down to where I couldn't hear it it wouldn't run right.
