Title: rtv silicone curing time
Post by YoungSavage on 06/10/14 at 11:12:41

Hey all,
Just curious how important the entire 24 hour curing period for ultra blue rtv is? Put my modded tensioner on last night and put ultra blue on the gasket for that extra security. It's been somewhere around 16 hours but want to ride to work. I know in the past on my Camaro I've had numerous people tell me as long as it's been given some decent time to cure, around 8-10, you're good.

Snot gonna leak as long as you did a good job,, You didnt goop it on did ya? There are oil passages there,, I didnt use any sealer last time I was in there. It doesnt leak, but , BUT,, I Did hafta snug them down more than I really liked.. I wouldnt go Goopless again,,

The thing is, w/ Goop, is to apply it & let it cure almost,, then put it together. It needs to be soft enough to flatten out & "get even".. but skinned over so it isnt still "wet". Then, ya snug it down just a bit,& wait, then tighten it after its cured. BUT, Ive never had the patience for that. I always go together too soon.

No I've learned never to goop it on. My brothers taught me from working on cars you don't worry about what it says with that 1/8 inch bead. Get the rtv on your fingers and apply it smoothly where any contact points are going to be. So I definitely made sure to be conservative with those oil passages. That is the main reason I'm asking... don't want any tiny floaties blocking oil.

Heck the case in some of those areas are probably just over 3/16 couldn't imagine trying to apply a perfect bead of silicone to the gasket and make contact every place.
