Title: Thanks "mysterious johnh" for allowing me in the f

Thanks John,

Just picked up my first street bike at 56.  Found an ad on Craig's List for a 1997 Savage 650 that has been sitting for 7 years, $600.  Well that was enough for me to take a look. Pulled up to the house in an upper class neighborhood and when the garage door open I knew it was mine.  I figure the inside of the tank would be rusty so I shined the light in and laughed, it was spotless, stinky but spotless.  Brought it home, cleaned the tank and carb, put a new battery in and off she went.

Much cleaner now. Softscrub and a tooth brush cleaned up the chrome and aluminum rather well.

I think you got a screamin' deal!

Can you see if there is a brand name on those floor boards? They sure look different than the others I have seen on our scooters.

I don't see a maker mark other than the Harley bolt head.  I've already changed them out to "O" ring pegs.  The Bike also came with a Harley windshield, plate bracket, and logo on the back of the sissy bar. The woman I bought if from got the bike from her dad who is a big Harley guy. She got pregnant and parked it 7 years ago.  Her husband just wanted it out of the garage.

Take it for a short ride and consider the Rotella engine oil, much praised on this forum. Consider the Yamaha Raptor petcock, much praised on this forum. Make sure the IRC tyres, much condemned on this forum aren't cracking in the walls. May you have many thousand pleasant miles on your  new bike.

Thanks for the advice.

I've been looking at changing the petcock, already had an issue with it although it seems alright now.  I may still have some Rotella oil left from when I had my diesel. The tires look like new and have no cracking at all. I have approx. 85 miles on it and been up to 60 mph so far, goes great.  Going to add a windshield, Viking saddlebags (so I can take my lunch to work) and I need to get some forward controls. I already added a super bright LED tail light bulb and what a difference.

I definitely stole it and go a lot more than expected too. I call the seller right at the time it was listed.  He called me ten minutes latter to make sure I was coming because his e-mail was full and everybody was offering to pick it up right away.  He asked me if he should have the next guy inline show up 15 minutes after me. Thankfully I talked him out of it or I think it would have become an auction in his driveway.

I'm surprised no one commented on the "hood" ornament yet on the front fender.  It takes batteries, lights up and changes colors.  It's now on my desk.

Wow...
nearly as classic as the "barn find" corvette story. You did well! Congratz and welcome to the club!

Post a good photo of the hood ornament, it might be worth something to a collector.

You sound like my son, he didn't like it either.  As a matter of fact, he doesn't like the fenders, the passenger seat, or the saddle bags and windshield I'm going to put on it.
