Title: Exhaust chirping Post by Rembrandt on 06/08/14 at 16:11:29 So I've almost got used to my belt squealing issues and now my exhaust is chirping, but mostly only on startup and slowly rolling into town at the ends of riding. I got a mechanic's opinion to ensure it was nothing serious. Should I just keep watching the marketplace ads here or any other suggestions? Anyone else have this issue? Thanks for any input. |

Title: Re: Exhaust chirping Post by Rembrandt on 06/08/14 at 16:53:07 My mechanic said it was likely the baffles in the muffler and everything was tight. I'm not mechanically inclined, so I was just happy to get it verified nothing serious was going on with this new weird sound. |

Title: Re: Exhaust chirping Post by 1st2know on 06/08/14 at 20:09:55 Yes, the baffles in your muffler are beginning to rust out. You have about five years to find a replacement. Really. They put so much steel in that muffler, you could probably make another motorcycle with just that steel. I wouldn't worry about it unless you store it out in the rain, next to an ocean. |

KInda like someone barely whistling & letting their lips flap at the same time,, It just means its time to find a Dyna muffler,, :) No biggee! Its a great way to start down the "Ill take care of this thing myself" road,, |
Title: Re: Exhaust chirping Post by NickGann on 06/09/14 at 16:51:42 This was the first mod to my 3 week old purchase. I went with a Jardine I found on ebay...and now I am addicted to modding. |
Title: Re: Exhaust chirping Post by Rembrandt on 06/09/14 at 19:49:49 Thanks for the helpful response folks. I really don't notice the exhaust or belt sounds so much at highway speeds. As for the baffles rusting, this 06 I bought last year had just over 3000 miles and looks as though it's been well stabled and it always gets put away in my carport. If rain is imminent I even take the extra step of putting the full cover over it. Last winter it was stored in a friend's garage. So go figure, I guess. Thanks again. I've been riding mostly at night after work and I'm really struggling to stay below 65 miles per hour on our fifty highways--80 kms per hour up here in Canada, but my bike is American and resgisters in miles. Woo-hoo! |

Title: Re: Exhaust chirping Post by Steve H on 06/10/14 at 04:31:32 The heat and chemicals in the exhaust promote rust of the baffles. |
Title: Re: Exhaust chirping Post by Rembrandt on 06/12/14 at 19:54:09 Yes Shorty, I'm sure, because I've had belt squeal off and on, mostly on, since I bought the bike just over a year ago. This is a new sound. I've got a freakin' symphony going on with this bike...lol, but at highway speeds, I hear nothing but the wind and rumble of the engine, so I'm doing ok overall. |
Title: Re: Exhaust chirping Post by WD on 06/13/14 at 08:28:11 Your engine rumbles? Lucky you, they usually sound like a worn out sewing machine or a riding mower with a broken piston ring or two... The muffler on my 2003 started chirping and a bit of clanking this week. Finally blew the baffle loose internally. Time to decide on a standard slash cut or fishtail muffler... Actually going to miss having the engine so quiet that it doesn't wake up the neighbors when I get home from work (after midnight). |

On just about every ride I wear earplugs......I wanna' keep that little bit of hearing that I still have. Not sure if the hearing loss is genetic....or the years I spent on the back of 2 stroke dirt bikes and working in a lawn mower/chain saw shop. |
