Title: Tires  (Matching brands/models)
Post by MnSpring on 06/05/14 at 17:17:35

Wow. Just can't find any, 'matching', rubber!
Have tired 5 MC web sites,
The closest was Met 880 Rear, and a 888 Front.

Always have been a believer in, SAME, tires.
(for a MC)
Only in a car or truck, but then, the Front 2 the Same.
The Rear 2 the Same.

I would rather go narrower, than OEM. But, Not wider.
This bike is Not made for, 'cruising'.
I believe it is a back road, in town, short rides.
Not freeway, long trip, 'hog', type, bike.
If I wanted that, I would buy a Can-Am.

Factory says 100/90-19 F; 140/80-15 R.
Not a problem going with 90/90-19 & 130/80-15
But those two are just as hard to find a, 'match', for.

So question: If, 'mis matched', has to be.
What are suggestions.
As it is to find a match for the 140/80-15 & 100/90-19
(Other than the very hard rubber OEM brand)

And, I don't need to spend big bucks, as,
in 7-8 years, (if I keep it that long),
their will be plenty of tread left.
but they will be hard, and need replacing again.

Bought a 1999 Jeep Wrangler in 2011, it had, Original Rubber on it.
(With Lots of tread left),  BUT, ya couldn't pull your hat off on a windy day on wet pavement. Put new rubber on it. (Could drive it anywhere).
Then the wife, 'claimed' it. I only use it when I need to pull something out that is, 'stuck', with it. Then I get yelled at, cause I got mud on it !

Anyway on to the MC tires. Looked, did several searches on this site,
Perhaps I am missing something. But all I got was what to do if larger tires were put on.

Thanks for your input.

I found matching tires. Dunlop 404's. 100/90/19 and 140/80/15. Amazon. They have "approval" from a couple of old timers here on the forum.

I had to change out my side bracket bolts to a lower profile head for a 140/90/15. The stock ones rubbed the sidewalls of a Kenda. I don't know if they'd do the same on a Dunlop or other brand...

You'll find that all tires will vary in width.
The spit's are the widest tire I've seen in 140

and of course, won't hurt you any to get 130's

You want a 90 profile in the rear, be it a 130 or a 140mm width. You can find matches from Pirelli (Route 66), Metzler (ME77 or ME880), Dunlop (D404 or cruiser style Qualifiers), Shinko (several series), Kenda (several series), Duro, Bridgestone (several series), IRC (several series)...

Shopping anywhere other than Motorcycle Superstore is a waste of money. Best tire prices going, and their stock is fresh (unlike several big name warehouses I could mention but won't).

I had the same trouble I got metzlers.

140/90/15 880 on the back

100/90/19 888 on the front.

I have no complaints.  I had been using dunlops, but "everyone" said these would give me alot more miles.  We'll see.

I have the Dunlop 404's on mine and they are fine.

140/90 was a no-go for me on the rear, not just the fender side-brace bolts, the belt guard was hitting the sidewall too..

I skipped trying to get "matched" tires and got a 140/80 rear..
all is good now  ;)

I'm running Metzler 880 front and back. I didn't have any issues with the bolts rubbing on the 140/90 tire (even with factory bag supports)

I gave up matching front and back years ago...

I don't think my front tire has any idea what my rear tire is...
.. or cares... ;D...

Thanks for the advice all !
I do enjoy the experience on the S-40, that most of you have over, my experience, with the same.

I took the plunge, Have a set of Dunlop 440's. ordered.
100/90-19,  and 130/90-15.
Decided on the 130 vs the 140's, because,
the original tires on it are, 5.37 wide,
and the Dunlop, 140's were 5.85 wide.

Also, a 'little' narrower tire, 'should', give better, slow, quick turning, ability. Also putting on a  130 on a 140 rim, should be about 1/8" taller, in a 90 vs a 80.  And should have plenty of clearance.
(According to my measurements)
And of course if the Speado  is not true, one can just remember the difference.  (If not: The good thing about dementia is: 'You can wrap your OWN Christmas/Birthday presents')

In my search, for people who are new to this ride, and new to MC's.
(As the Excellent advice from this forum)
Tires by brand, are  NOT, all, the same size.
((((EVEN, if their numbers say the same.))))

And if a 'tire' ordering place, will Not give you the measurements,
as to the, "Manufactures Stated Specifications",
as to the Actual, Inflated Sizes'.
(If of course, by experience, you don't know)
Go Else where.

In 5, internet places, 4 could not answer questions.
One did.  M.C. Superstore.

In fact one 'local',  (I DO  Like to give Local business, 'when I can'.)
Tired to sell me a, 'set of tires' for 'real good deal', and when I looked at the date code. They were made in 2000.

Cheese & Rice, 14 years Old   !!!!!!!!!
I was born at night, but not  LAST NIGHT!

Here is a suggestion,
(for the people that don't just, 'know', from experience).
When buying tires, if the tires are running just fine,
but have lost their tread, or are to old, and you want new.
MEASURE, what is is on their NOW. What is working, NOW.

Measure the side wall, (Thickness) and measure how high.
If you don't have the tools.
Just take a clamp, close it to just touch the sides,
and measure with a tape or ruler.
The higth, just take a tape, and measure from the 'center', of the axle, to the furthest point, of the tread, and X by 2.

Then when you order,  ASK,  what the dementions are,
as to the factory specks are.   If they give you a bunch of,
"Oh It doesn't matter"   Go Elsewhere.

Gee, knia like buying Pants or dresses for the wife/girlfriend.
Each Store/Brand/Style, had a  TOTALLY  Different view/opinion,
of  what a,  Size 6 is  !!!!!!!!!

Of course, if you are stripping the S-40/LS650 down.
And building something else from it. all bets are off.
ANY tire that fits the rim will work,
Just get ready to modify other things, to get them to work.

Again. Great site. Great accumulated knowledge.

Thanks !

You can get a matching set of Shinko 777/712 or tourmaster 230. I have the tourmasters and am very happy.

OK, I'm just gonna' say this once. Metzeler 880s fit front and rear. The 140/80-15 is not always listed in catalogs, but it is readily available. I'm running them.  :)

Since we're on the subject of tires, I have been looking high and low for a matching set of white walls but can't seem to find anything.
