Title: Savage won't start
Post by RatdogWillie on 06/01/14 at 08:46:49

Went for a ride yesterday, came home, parked, 20 minutes later bike wouldn’t start. It’s a 2007 Savage.

Turned the key on, neutral light was on. When I turned it to the start position, I heard a laud click, the neutral light when out (so did the headlight), and nothing.  It does not try to turn over, just the one laud click.

This morning I checked the battery, it reads 12.6 volts, I checked the main fuse, it’s okay. I checked the 2 yellow relay fuses, they are okay.

Any suggestions?

take the seat off and check the connectors leading to the starter relay.

We have 3 fuses?... :-?...
I thought we only had 2...

Sure sounds like fuse blew... Did you check them with a meter or just eyeball?...

Yeah, an instant problem like that sounds like electrical fer sure, a ground fault perhaps....

I use two leads attached to both of my nipples, one to each side of the suspected component. Not sure of its accurate, but I know it sure is fun  :-*

Meter ....  0 ohms

There are 2 yellow relay fuses....one is probably a spare.

Did you try jumping it with another battery ? A reading of 12.6V with no load on the battery doesn't really tell you very much. If that's the original battery in an 07 it's getting kind of old. Wouldn't be the first time a battery just up and croaked with no warning.

If the battery became weak 20 minutes after a ride, wouldn't it at least attempt to turn over?
.....and why would the lights go out as soon as the starter button is pushed?

MMMkay,, check the battery voltage by grounding your meter on the starter body. That way youll see if you have a crappy ground between, well,, you do that math,,

AND, Hit the starter, hold that button for just a few seconds & grab around the ground on the case, any pertinent connectors. IF you have a resistive connection, it will get hot with current flow thru it.,.
Is the starter even TRYING? Have ya pulled the plug to see if itll spin it over w/ no load?
Id wait on that one,, BUt check batty V while youre pushing the Go button,, Thats a real telling thing,,

000ps! I left out the part about hitting the starter button at the beginning.

Yep,, I read that too,, & then I completely disregarded it & went off the track,,

He rode it, parked it, went out & shazzam,, sheza no wanna play,,,

Awwrite, Neutral lite is out,, Put the stand up, even if youre in neutral,
No go? Bypass the clutch switch, dont make a science project out of it, this is just troubleshooting, a piece of paper clip will do fine,

HMM,, Dangitt,, I just spotted that
He never even got TO hitting the starter button again,,

Well,, What gets activated with the key just on? If he heard a Pop & the N lite went out, then what about the diodes in the kickstand circuit?

Weak.. yeah. But it also could have gone from OK to junk too. One click and then Nada. It happens.

I cant picture a battery failure so complete it stops liting the N lite, yet, shows 12.6Volts.. but then the projector that creates my mental images has been giving me troubles lately.,.,
& Ive done run plumb OUTTA film for my photographic memory! Dangitt,, Anyone know where I can get some?

I hooked the battery charger to the battery terminals and the lights came on with the key in the on position. So I removed the battery and topped it off with distilled water. I now have  it on the charger with the caps off.
I briefly removed the positive charger cable to take a voltage reading a few minutes ago and it read 13.6 volts.

I have it on the charger now while I work on replacing a drive belt on the riding mower. I am struggling remove a "C" clip in order to lift a pulley.

I rode the bike to Harbor Freight yesterday to buy a ring clip remover,

but it doesn't fit....it was the only one they sell. The bike ran fine then, it was after I returned and decided to make beer run. http://www.tasteandvote.com/images/bieres/coorslightcold.jpg

That's when the problem started.  :(

check the connectors on the regulator.

also, only make beer runs on the way back from HF.

the bike knows, after 1 of those you don't ride.

One quick note, the lights go out when you hit the starter button because the bike is designed to do that. They come back on when the bike starts up.  From experience, a battery can go dead in a click. Mine started just fine, I went to a gas station to fill it up then nothing, nada, nil when I went to start it after filling up.

I definitely think it sounds like a battery issue.  Is it the factory battery?  How long was your ride to HF?  I'd be willing to bet that if you hooked up your voltmeter to your battery and watched it while trying to start the battery, the voltage takes a huge drop.

Hopefully charging and topping your electrolyte provides some relief. Likely time for a new battery, though.

Did you get your bike running yet? Sure sounds like the starter relay to me. I would take a large screwdriver and short it across the two large terminals on the starter relay and see if your starter engages that way. If starter works then verify your getting 12 vdc to the starter relay coil terminals when you go thru a normal start attempt. If the starter relay is getting 12 vdc to the coil terminals but starter is still not engaging/turning on then replace the starter relay. EBay has some generic ones that should work fine.

It was the battery.

Thanks to all that offered assistance!!..... I bought a Honda battery at the local MC shop and got gout in my right hand from the beer..... then one of my dogs bit my left hand....2 swollen hands = no riding.

If the dog had died and my woman left me driving my 97 Chevy pick up, the song could have became a country hit.

Nah... modern country: The wife tries to take your dog and the pickup and the dog bites your wife and comes home with her purse with all your credit cards in it.  ;D
