Title: Oil switch up?
Post by Jsud04 on 05/28/14 at 15:08:27

I am running rotella t and thinking about Mobil 1 V twin...

What are your thoughts on this oil? Can I switch it up without replacing the filter? Can I switch back to Dino?

Won't affect the filter at all.  You can go back and forth between dino and synth twice a day if you want.

I don't know anything about the Mobil 1 V-twin oil, though.

Even rated at 20W50, it is thin, pours like 5W20. Expect a very noisy top end.

You don't have a V-Twin.  V-twin engines have roller bearings for the cam, rollers on the lifters, and is a dry sump engine.  Our engine has the cams riding in the aluminum head and it does not have rollers on the rocker arms.    So.....why do you think oil made for a V-Twin is a better oil for the Savage?

I have used both and in my opinion I would not do that swap.....
WD is 100% right!

Oh I am hearing yall and I'll take the advice. I was looking to go to a heavier weight to combat consumption. I am convinced that my 4speed is tougher on oil than yalls 5ers...

If youre having oil consumption issues that you think may be a bit more than "Normal",, have a look at the black hose that comes up on the right front of the head. Make sure it is aimed up as far away( down its length, not necessarily trying to go straight up) from the head as ya can get it. That way whatever oil mist gets past the "Scrubby" thats Supposed to be stuffed in the head will have a chance at collecting & dripping back in. You mite wanna pop the tank & pull that hose & have a look to see it that thing is still in there.
Are ya seeing increased consumption as the miles increase on the oil change? By 2500 miles I was seeing my Rotella T get used up a lot faster than when it was fresh. I always carried a little chainsaw oil bottle ( coupla ounces) with a top from a gear oil bottle, which is cut off on the tip. I also had a small piece of wood with a groove to lay on the oil fill, cuz it was always hard to open & I didnt like plier marks on it.

Well......if I wanted to try a thicker oil than 15W-40 Rotella T......I would try Brad Penn 20W-50 oil.  Not sure about the ZDDP levels in their specific motorcycle oils - but the old car folks with flat tappet cams swear by the Brad Penn oils as they have a hig ZDDP content.

I'll mess with the breather hose this weekend after I finish my sissy bar.
