I figured pulling the tank would make life easier. Plus I can route my power wires better. I have never done the valves but have removed the tank.

I recently learned how to adjust mine.  Make sure you can find the TDC.  You'll be able to wiggle the rocker arms a very small amount.

Plan on a rather long day for your first go and do it right.  It will be worth it and you'll have a strong understanding how our engine's really work.  Post any questions, we'll be happy to help.

It took me a while my first time because the clymer manual said to turn the engine clockwise by turning the alternator rotor bolt to the right. Turn it left, the same direction the tires rotate.

OK. Thanks. I will plan it for next weekend instead of after work one day this week.

Ohh, absolutely,, its on a cold engine, anyway,, & no need to get yourself backed in a corner,, you can tear into it on Friday, after work,, but dont try adjusting valves till theyve cooled.

My first time to do the Savage valves took about an hour. First time on any bike took 2.5-3 hrs.

Like they said, make sure you have the right tools and a decent place to work (don't want any dirt getting in there). Read the instructions a couple times then go do it.  You won't have any trouble.

Definitely not the easiest bike to learn to do valves on. The principle is the same as on any bike but access is bloody tricky on the Savage. I couldn't get at it until I got those long feeler gauges strips that you can cut down to the right size. It's the trickiest bit of the tune up - so if you can conquer it you will save a lot of dosh.

I still need to pick up some feeler gauges. I don't know where mine are.

I removed the leaves I wanted from the packet & bent them into a Z shape with a Ski Tip on the end.

I removed the leaves as well only I bent mine into a lazy Z. :-) Three needed adjusted. one exhaust valve was fine. It took a couple hours. I lost the rubber thing for my fuel tank in the process. Can't find it anywhere. The front of the tank wobbles too much. I guess I'll order one.

My upper motor mount was pretty loose. I figured that was the cause of my nasty vibrations.

The Raptor petcock came apart when I attempted to remove the fuel line. I will be ordering one of those as well.

The bike runs much quieter and smoother now. Once I replace the missing/broken stuff all I need is highway bars for my trip to Boston.

If a tube slipped out of the body on the petcock, you can fix that,,

Make marks on the tube that would cause drag, use a little JB weld.

Surely you can find a chunk of suitable material to jam in the tank mount,,

I didn't think of the JB Weld. I already ordered a replacement. Oh well. And believe it or not, I could not find anything to stick in there. But, my grass got cut and I found it laying in the grass. So I'll get that back together today.
