Title: Idle speed guesstimate Post by daltmyer920 on 05/22/14 at 21:34:47 Wanted to load a quick video. If anyone could let me know if idle speed seems alright? I personally think may be a tad on the slow side I can email the video to someone but won't let me load the video. So PM if u can help me out. Thanks |
Title: Re: Idle speed guesstimate Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/22/14 at 22:42:22 If you think its a bit slow, jack it up a little,.,Low idle rpm = low oil pressure = accelerated wear on the cam bearings, which arent insert bearings. Theyre line bored holes that are 1/2 in the head & 1/2 in the head cover. Ya dont wanna starve that for oil.. Until you KNOW what the idle RPM is, youre way ahead spending a buck on gas because its a little higher than needed. If you can get on a flat parking lot & get rolling in first gear & let it drop to an idle, it should be making about 10 MPH. Wait till its all warmed up, Someone who knows the Ge3ars/RPM/speeds may correct me on this. |
Title: Re: Idle speed guesstimate Post by jcstokes on 05/22/14 at 22:47:54 It possibly should go popapopapopa at idle rather than thuump thuump thuump. But I'm not a techie or expert. |

Title: Re: Idle speed guesstimate Post by doctorpc on 05/23/14 at 04:17:13 I have a tach on my S40 and i know my idle is about 1250rpm i was told that was about right to keep it above 1000rpm |
Title: Re: Idle speed guesstimate Post by curmudgeon on 05/23/14 at 06:24:13 I don't have a tach, but as far as determining rpm by ear, I approach the problem logically: It's a 4 stroke engine with 1 cylinder, therefore I should hear 1 exhaust pulse every 2 rpm. If I wanted an 1100 rpm idle, I should hear ~550 exhaust pulses each minute. The fastest youtube metronome I could find is 500 bpm, so just make your idle sound a little faster than this and you should be good: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QImRxzVz3hg |
