Title: Ryca wheel spoking
Post by Jeff71 on 05/20/14 at 19:31:49

Hi guys!
New guy here. Considering building a Ryca CS-1 and was reading Gyrobob's buildup. I was concerned with the wheel spoking. Is this wrong? Something looks wonky about it. Was this brought up to Ryca? Was it corrected? Should it be something I should watch out for? I don't have time to make a mistake on this project! Thanks!

Jeff

Here are this pictures I'm talking about.

Mis-laced. Those bends in the spokes are just waiting for an opportunity to break... and the spoke nipples are going to chew that rim apart. Wrong spoke length, wrong spoke gauge, wrong spoke nipple size.

100% guaranteed to fail.

I believe that RYCA has addressed this issue a year or so ago.  The rims they were using had the holes in the rim punched at the wrong angle for a drum rear brake.

I have seen some other members on here build wheels by using a drill to oval the holes in the rim to make them work.  Me.....I would rather buy the right rim and not take a chance......as failure would not be pretty.  I am all for saving money when possible - but spokes and wheels is not a place I am willing to cut corners.

If they don't have it fixed yet.....then get a rim from Buchanans Spoke and Wheel as they will punch the holes at the proper angle.  My reciept from Buchanan's states:

REWM41836
EXCEL WM4 (2.50) x 18" ALUMINUM RIM - 36H
PUNCH FOR 07 SUZUKI LS650 REAR DRUM HUB w/.281 NIPPLES

I used their stainless 8 gauge spoke set - your nipple size may be different.

I purchased my CS-1 kit last fall and the rear wheel was laced fine.  As Dave mentions, Ryca corrected this problem.
If you start at reply #186 and some of the replies following in Gyrobobs build thread you'll see a response from Casey at Ryca.
I think all your answers are in the Double Ryca Build thread and having talked with and emailed Ryan at Ryca a few times it is my opinion that you could call them and express your concerns.  They are very good folks to work with.
I'm not 100% sure but I believe Ryca uses Buchanan spoke and rim to make the rear wheel assembly.  I asked for an update on the status of my order in an email to Ryca and if I recall correctly the reply was they were just waiting for the rear rim to be picked up from Buchanan and some parts to come back from powder coat.
If you want some pictures of my rim let me know and I will take them and post.

I just laced up 2 18" wheels myself this week. If you want info for what works or pictures let me know.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated! I'll probably have a pile of questions as I go along. Will have my license in about 4 weeks. Passed the class last Friday with flying colors!
