Title: Help My bike hates me
Post by quentin99 on 05/14/14 at 20:57:29

So less than 2 weeks ago I bought an 1987 suzuki savage. It had a few issues needed some new bulbs. Needed a clutch cable and needs the brake switch for the front done. Still working on the last one. I was riding it today and it was fine ran out of gas (still getting used to riding) so i switch on the reserve and get gas. So I am riding home tonight and it is stalling at every light. It wants to stall when I let off the throttle. So i pull it into the garage and notice that some gas is leaking out of the bottom drip tube. I walk upstairs and my friend says you smell like gas. and so did the whole garage. No the bike is sitting outside.

Here are some things I know
The idle screw is not to low
The bike has 9500 miles
The carbs were not cleaned this year the bike had stabil over the winter months
Ran fine for the first 100 miles
If you look Into the tank you can see some rust speckles on the wall
I put premium gas both times I filled up in it
My bike backfires like a champ and shoots flames. I read it is common on these bikes.

Before I spend the money to get the carbs clean I want to know if that is really the issue.
Other than that I love this bike it is fun.

First, you only have ONE carb....
Second...don't use premium...
Third, get a raptor petc0ck...
Do this check
http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1251932429/1
Fourth, pull the cap off the drain tube and let all the gas out of the air filter cavity and dry out your air filter.
Fifth... check your oil level...if it is over full you have gas in your oil... pull the fill cap and smell...if there is gas smell, change your oil and filter.

Message back when the above are done...
:)

Yep, that pretty well covers it. Your petcock failed. Find the list and add your name to it, most of us have either been there or swapped to a Yamaha petcock before the stock "fishing weight to be" could fail...

Premium in a Savage is like 100 year old champagne for a street corner hooker. Unnecessary, Thunderbird is more than adequate...  ;)

Post by quentin99 on 05/14/14 at 21:27:15

Yeah I was just reading through the forum and the Petcock seems like it is a common issue. Now the leaking gas. I turned the petcock to prime to see if their was any air in the like and then turned it back to on when the bike turned on. Was the gas just bypassing the carb and going straight to drain line?

So I am new to bikes. But on this one their is no glass oil level checker and no dipstick or dipstick built into the cap so how do I check the oil level?

Yeah I know it is one carb it has just been a long frustrating day with the bike.

the bike had like a nipple cap on the end with a hole in it so i just squeezed it and let the gas come out. But I will remove it tomorrow morning and let the air filter dry out in the sun.

All of my friends said premium is the only thing you should put in your bike but then again they all have sports bikes haha.

So the guy who had the bike before me decided it was a good idea to clean the oil filter with gas and reuse it. So I am thinking I need to change the oil as soon as possible.

What about the verseys chain adjuster. Do I need to do that soon the bike has almost 10k miles. I have not popped off the cover yet so I dont know if the chain is loose.

Thanks for all of your help

All the above and 'you ran outta gas'

so all the crap lounging on the bottom got up and ran down the tube...
into the carb and lodged in the float valve or sucked up into a jet and is still there.

drop the bowl and check for crap.
slip out the float pin and unscrew the valve retaining screw.
pull down the seat and inspect for crap.

you need an owners manual, it's in the tech section

you won't know till you pop the cover.

Look up what ever you think is causing problems in the "Tech Section", lots of good info there.

The "site level" is a small 1" window on the right bottom side of your case. Go to this page and check it out.

http://suzukisavage.com/cgi-bin/YaBB.pl?num=1099572561

LOL, sounds like you should start reading about your bike here and not listen to your "buds"... I have a Kawasaki ninja and the manufacture says "use regular fuel" and so did the sticker on the tank (I removed that).....
The guys here have been riding bikes 3x as long as your "buds" have been alive, they will help you solve any delema you got!

see you around eh?  8-)

Oil site glass is on the right hand side above the muffler heat shield. Have someone sit on the bike and hold it upright. If the window is full, your crankcase is overfilled.

We need to know your location, including elevation, to help with any other well known "this is NOT a new rider grade bike" gotcha's. Keep in the back of your mind at all times, that the Savage is a knock off of 1950s and 60s English racing singles. It is extremely primitive. The front brake was high tech state of the art in 1970, the electrical system in 1973, the ignition in 1976, the carburetor about 1978. Even the drive belt and pulleys are rip offs of late 1970s Kawasaki parts...

That said and out of the way, these cute little toy motorcycles are a lot of fun. I actually like the more primitive design aspects, I even ride my 2003 on dirt roads and in my orchards. Looks like a 250, handles like a 250, rides like a 450 and goes like a hopped up 500 twin.

DO NOT try and keep up with even a Ninjette 250 sportbike, you'll get hurt. Don't let your sportbike friends con you into riding like they can, you're poking along in a Model A from 1928, they are piloting a road course prepped Z06 Vette... Apples to watermelons comparison.

Study the forum. Improve your bike's shortcomings (they all have a few) and enjoy it. We've worked out fixes for all of the common pitfalls, and most of the relatively obscure ones.

All that stuff is pretty common and not all that difficult to correct.  Here is the table of contents from the tech section.  This is a great resource.

Good luck!

Yeah CARB's and me don't get along. If I take it apart it is never going back together to many small pieces. I can drop the bowl and see if their is any gunk in it no problem.

Yeah I knew about the glass oil level checker I'm the one that taught my friend about it. I looked on my bike didn't see one but I will check tomorrow.

Follow the black line down from the battery. When you get to the exhaust pipe, look a bit to the right on the bottom of the engine. I'd add an arrow, but, computers and I don't get along very well.

Here you go, with an arrow. :)
Oil site glass location. If the bike hasn't been washed lately it could be covered with road grime.

Is it just the slight start of rust showing on the metal, or is there actual flaking?

If it's just showing NP, if there is flaking you should address it.

Apparently the Raptor petcock part number is 5LP-24500-01. There are several Raptor petcocks and some use smaller diameter pipes.

So I searched eBay by model number and got some results all for a 01-05 660 yahama raptor. So I searched again but this time 660 raptor. Found the one for the 01-05 and its a third of the price. My question is: is it going to fit right. I read that a lot of people order the wrong size outlet for gas

Not sure what you mean by a third of the price, but you'll spend about 17-20.00 on a reputable parts site for a Raptor 660. If you're spending a third of that, you're probably getting a Chinese knock off that won't work.

Title: Re: Help My bike hates me

Its just soo easy to walk in the Yakky shop & spend the $$ & KNOW youre getting THE right part

Title: Re: Help My bike hates me
Post by Bluesman on 05/15/14 at 22:50:47

The Chinese ripoffs fit the tank, but the outlet pipe is too small. This can easily be fixed - just cut  a 15mm long piece off the vacuum hose you won´t be needing anymore, put it over the outlet pipe. You have just increased the pipe diameter by just about the right amount. Now, the gas hose will fit. 8-)

The Genuine Yamaha Raptor Petcocks will have a part number and a Yamaha box.  If you don't see the box in the add and the price is not over $ 20.....keep looking until you find the right part.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-YAMAHA-RAPTOR-660-FUEL-PETCOCK-FITS-SUZUKI-LTZ250-LTZ400-/200655694620?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item2eb802eb1c&vxp=mtr

This is a nice listing......but it is not a Yamaha part.  The outlet pipe has two ridges...the original has an expanded pipe....not a machined pipe.  If you don't see the part number and the box....don't buy it.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Yamaha-Raptor-YFM660-YFM-660-Gas-Fuel-Tank-Switch-Petcock-/330695040035?pt=Motorcycles_Parts_Accessories&hash=item4cfef5dc23&vxp=mtr

You also need to avoid the petcocks with the short stem.  This is a Yamaha part....but it will not fit the Savage as the valve does not extend down far enough to clear the bottom seam on the tank.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GENUINE-YAMAHA-RAPTOR50-RAPTOR-80-GRIZZLY-80-PETCOCK-LEVER-SCREW-/171273259738?pt=Apparel_Merchandise&hash=item27e0ae8ada&vxp=mtr

This is a pretty creative add.  It says it is a Genuine Gas Fuel Valve Petcock......it does not say it is genuine Yamaha!  It is also a short stem petcock that will not work on the Savage.
http://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-GENUINE-GAS-FUEL-VALVE-PETCOCK-2004-2011-YAMAHA-YFM350-RAPTOR-350-OEM-/111292783378?pt=Motors_ATV_Parts_Accessories&hash=item19e9911b12&vxp=mtr

The bottom line........and strong suggestion is......buy the Yamaha 5LP-24500-01.  It fits properly, works properly, and is bolt on.  If you aren't going to buy from a reputable Yamaha parts retailer in person or online.....at least be sure it is a genuine part before you buy it on eBay.  If you don't see the box and part number.....keep looking.

I just phoned my local yamaha stealership and not only do they not have the part in stock it costs 42 and change from them. I'm thinking of going with the Amazon listing found at:

http://www.amazon.com/Yamaha-5LP245000100-Fuel-thingy-Assembly/dp/B004K9I25C

Yes, I finally need to change to a Raptor. Even mine finally went south after all this time of me quietly sitting to the sidelines of the great Raptor Wars. After 28 years and 50,000 klicks it has given up the ghost.

Oil is fine. Did the test covered the vacuum line it ran better and then died. It seemed like the engine was flooded and I heard a ticking sound so I'm going to rip off the cover later and check the chain.

Bike running. With stock peacock and the vacuum line attached to the carb. With the line out and plugged it idled fine for a bit and got really sluggish when you twisted the throttle. But it's making a ticking sound I'm thinking it's the timing chain. Anyways take a listen and let me know what you think it is. I have not pulled the cover yet

Youtube says the video is private. You need to make it public.

You can also run the stock petcock on "prime" and it bypasses the vacuum. If the bike runs better on prime chances are the petcock is going bad. But you won't have "reserve" so you need to watch your gas.  Ask me how I know...

The video is now public and here is the video with the vacuum lines plugged and it running on prime. The bike sounds a lot louder. Espically the backfires :)

Yeah, 17mm is about the serviceable limit. I think you got lucky. Definitely the Versy tensioner mod at the least. The chain should still be serviceable.

Title: Re: Help My bike hates me

How do you service the chain? If I got a new chain would it push the plunger back in so its not close to 17mm?

Title: Re: Help My bike hates me
Post by quentin99 on 05/19/14 at 08:20:23

Also when I pulled the tank off gas came out of the line for like 2 seconds not even an ounce of gas. Is that normal. Shouldnt the gas have all drained through the line?

There's no servicing a chain, you simply replace it.

Yes, a new chain will push it back in, probably to 9 to 12mm.
but you'll be doing that every <insert your current mileage here>.
whereas with a versy adjuster you'll get twice as much mileage out of the chain.

Title: Re: Help My bike hates me
Post by quentin99 on 05/19/14 at 08:46:46

Yeah I do want to do the adjuster I just dont have 170 bucks laying around at the moment. I was figuring the chain would be alot cheaper and get me riding for a bit while I save up for the adjuster

Title: Re: Help My bike hates me
Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/19/14 at 08:58:35

Start with the Versy, youll wring the rest of the service life outta that chain. It wont ALLOW the worn cam chain to destroy your engine, so ya get peace of mind AND save $$$ on cam chains.

The local Yammy shop charged me about $26.00 for the Raptor petcock.
Someone recently bought one online, paid about $7.00. Looked like an Official Yamaha box, but the petcock was a way crappy Chinese knockoff.. so be careful.

Of all the mods a guy CAN do, those are the 2 that simply should be done. I dont get a nickel for advertising the Versy, but I am 100% impressed by them & can see no better way to protect the engine from its built in land mine. The stock petcock can create so many oddball symptoms when it starts acting up.. Its really bizarre the troubles it can cause, but when it fails AND the float valve in the carb isnt perfect at the same time, gas can get in the oil.. & that aint no good at ALL..
So, Id recommend the Versy & of course, youre already on the Raptor thing. Just dont get excited & buy the worlds cheapest Raptor petcock,

Figure in your labor cost. The chain may be only $60 or so, but it takes hours to swap it out. Very easily could end up taking an entire weekend the first time. Lots of head scratching, beer breaks and trying to find the tools you gave flying lessons... I'd honestly prefer to scrap the bike out than change an OHC timing chain. At least with a Savage you don't need to remove the cylinder and split the cases like you do pretty much any other non-v-twin Japanese OHC bike, pop off the head cover and clutch cover and it is right there.

Post by justin_o_guy2 on 05/19/14 at 09:11:56

You dont Hafta spring for all that $$$,, you can forgo the roll pin "stop" in the slot ( OR, look at what Versy has & make one,, Really, a dremel, a drill, a roll pin.,.) Or, just take a pic to a welder & show him what ya want,, have that "extra hole" tab welded on the plunger,,
Ask Versy what he would charge to slot & pin one that already has the tab on it.
Do you have a drill press? If so, do you have a vise that has the screws built in so it can move the part under the drill bit? Get a mill tip & cut a slot..Lots of ways to do this & save $$$. YOu should be able to get your tensioner at least extended for less than the cost of a new cam chain,.
