Title: No neutral light
Post by bmwnunkie on 05/11/14 at 03:47:50

I get no neutral light when I start up. It is in neutral as the bike starts. If I engage a gear ( 1st, 2nd  ) the engine dies completely. Also it backfires like its going out of fashion.

Where do it start... getting a bit fed up :(

There is a sensor switch in the bottom right side of the engine.  The wire comes out of the engine at the bottom back right side of the engine case, travels up the right frame tube, and then goes up under the tank to a connector on the right side of the center frame tube under the gas tank.  The wire is bright blue.  You need to make sure the wire is connected and not broken somewhere.  Disconnect the wire at the connector and test to see it the switch provides a ground when the bike is in neutral....and an open circuit when the bike is in gear.

Kickstand switch is also wired into that circuit... It is a guaranteed to fail item, and it will do exactly as described when it fails. Green connector set under the left hand side cover. Unhook the sections, jumper wire in the bike side connector, see if it behaves.

yah, maybe the neutral light bulb just burned out?  Dying when put in gear sounds like kickstand switch.

You do have the kickstand up,right?

-and the "backfire" never goes out of fashion! ;D

The afterfire on shutdown is cured by putting the gear into 2nd and stalling out the bike.
