Title: Rear tire
Post by Ap5112 on 05/10/14 at 04:48:55

What's the biggest rear tire I can put on a stock rim with no fender and no mods to make fit?

150/80-15 0r 150/90-15. With a bit of swingarm redesign you could squeeze in a 170/80-15, BUT, the rim itself is safest running a 130/90-15.

The stock tires are already at the theoretical maximum safe width. Going much beyond them is going to negatively affect the ride quality and the handling capability. Not to mention (but I will anyway) risking the structural integrity if the rim itself.

If you want it to handle it's best, you need to run either an 80/90-19 or 90/90-19 on the front, and a 130/80-15 or 130/90-15 on the rear.

I put either 140/90/15 or 140/80/15 on mine. 140/90 sounds right, can't remember at the moment. Definitely bigger than stock, and rides much better. Then again anything rides better than riding with practically no tread.

Nope it's 10mm narrower for an improved crown profile and more precise handling.

Putting balloon tires on a semi-modern motorcycle is asking for trouble.

The Savage is under braked with the stock tires... The suspension as shipped is too soft. Small wheel bearings and lightweight axles. The bike does nothing atrociously, yet it also does nothing spectacularly. Going with a -1 or a -2 tire size improves the bike's functionality.

I'm all for looks, I know you've seen my 98 in a few of its various guises. But, I'm no longer going to sacrifice function for form.  My 03 is mainly stock, will be getting narrower tires next time it needs new skins.

Maybe it just looks bigger because it actually has tread :D

I could not get a 140/90 to fit but my bag support bolts can be modified..
the belt guard was touching but I could have modified it too.

the stock 140/80 is on there now

I'd go with the stock size or you nay have to get allen cap head bolts.  It can work, just a little bit of grief.
