Title: First Ride This Year
Post by engineer on 05/06/14 at 18:39:18

Beautiful weather today and I took the S40 out for the first ride after some improvements.  The new Dyna worked well; it crackled a little on some downshifts but it sounded good.  The jetting I used was 52.5/150 and it seemed fine but I didn't get to do a high speed roll off so jetting might change.  I made a short 6 degree adapter for installing the Dyna and was able to use both mounting points on the stock muffler bracket.

The biggest change was the handling, new tires made a huge improvement.  I put a Pirelli Speed Demon on the front and a Pirelli MT66 on the rear because of the 15 inch rim size.  It turns quicker and easier and really tracks well.  Best money I've ever spent on a bike.

Thanks to everyone who supplied information and opinions on the Dyna, jetting, tires, shocks etc.  Great forum.

Glad the ride went well.  We are finally getting to weather around here that allows me to ride without shivering!  The only downside about that is that the bugs are starting to grow in size and numbers.  I got one of those juicy ones with yellow internal parts right smack dab in the middle of my face shield on Saturday.  Yuck!

Your jetting looks to be very close to what I ended up with - but I still had a slight hesitation when applying light throttle.....at about 1/8th to 1/4 throttle.  I removed one washer to raise the needle and dropped back to a #50 pilot...and it ran great!  My final jetting was set up with a #150 main, #50 pilot, 2 washers.....I set it up using an O2 sensor and it showed the mixture was good.

We don't have any big juicy bugs yet but the time is not far off.  Thanks for the jetting tips, I'll keep your solution in mind as I make refinements to my bike.

I read one of your earlier posts that mentioned changing the needle height on the slide had a large effect on the jets.

My bike had a hesitation (lean surge) just as you started to open the throttle.  When you tried to accelerate away from a traffic light with normal car traffic....the bike would just not want to accelerate smoothly.  It idled fine.....and ran great as long as you accelerated quickly - but it did not like to accelerate when taking the slow and smooth approach.  I tried increasing the Pilot Jet to a #52.5, and then the main jet to a #152.5 - but it did not help.  When I took out one of the washers and raised the needle the lean surge went away- but the mixture got too rich everywhere else.  When I put the #50 and #150 back in.....it then ran great!  I had the advantage of having the O2 sensor and gauge installed at the time...so I could actually see the results and it really was nice to be able to confirm the jet changes were the proper ones.
