He was 32 or 33 years old when WWI started, and since he could ride, was made a dispatch rider. He was a commercial artist and did a series of 12 washes to commemorate the humorous aspect of his experiences during the war in 1919. Shortly after he and my grandmother, who was a decorated front line nurse, emigrated to Canada, originally to Toronto, and then to London, where he worked for Lawson and Jones until his death in 1953. The only design of his still in use is the Schneider's Girl, from the Schneider's meat co. He did all the labels for Labbatts brewery, and Campbell s soup, among many others.
He never rode a bike again after the war- he said he didn't want to tempt fate.
