being a truck driver and a bike rider,I'm astounded by the amount of bikes whizzing around the truck,some I see,most I hear,some scare the crap out of me,when a bike splits the lane,I think..mmmm,trying to stop 26000kg machine compared to his/her 750kg machine,have a look at this photo so next time you're riding around truck's,you'll know your safe spot's.. :)

Yep....runwyrlph has some experience with the spot in front of the truck, and was lucky to survive. A truck pulled up behind him at a red light....and the truck driver forgot he was there when the light turned green and ran him over.

I always use the method that if I can't see the truck drivers face in truck mirror....then he can't see me. That method only works when you are behing the truck, so I try and give them lots of room and myself an escape route when I am passing the truck. I never stay in a spot beside the truck where the driver can't see me.

I wonder how many actually know that? I am amazed at how people act around those big trucks. Its as if "Well,, that is a professional driver & he MUST know Im here & he Must surely be 100% able to not run over me".. Well,, deary, what if he ISNT perfect? & those "Gators",, Who believes those come off smoothly, quietly & safely? Have you Ever seen a blowout on a big truck? I have. Ive seen a coupla doozies,, One was a left front on a Mack that had no power steering. The wheel almost broke my arms, peeled hide off, as we IMMediately crossed the oncoming lane & headed straight for a power pole. I was just able to skin it past that pole, standing up & working the wheel with all my might..
I will not pass a big truck in the summertime unless I can drive right on by him. I wait in the lane behind the truck until the car in front of me is 100% clear so I can charge past the truck & get on in front.

The other blowout was so powerful that when it popped, it unseated the tire next to it. I had the window down & I felt a pressure blast on my chest IN The Cab,, I thot someone had taken a shot at me.
Winter time, dont see that many blow outs, but when the roads are hot, ohh baby,, be careful,

Was teaching a rookie driver back in 2000 or so, old Mack R685 tractor and an ancient (1958 or so) Great Dane flatbed. Blew an outer rear trailer tire, and the tire casing hit the pickup that was passing the trailer. Pickup, a brand new Chevy 1500, needed a new front end installed, the tire casing squashed the grill, the core support, the hood and wrinkled both fenders when the core support folded up. The kid in the Mack was lucky he didn't get shot over it, the pickup belonged to the local Boozefighters MC chapter president...

I've had a commercial license since 1997. I don't like driving/riding anywhere near a rig these days. Far too many drivers that don't do a full pre-trip inspection, don't have sufficient training, and don't realize just how big a vehicle they are piloting.

Old saying in trucking... "The one with the most lug nuts wins"...

Yup, exactly that spot! It's not a fun situation - and those big diesel engines are pretty loud when you're hanging onto his grill!

pleased to see you're still here :) , worst blow out I've had ripped the brake line off the rear wheel and actually peeled the exhaust pipe off,all I can say is "thank f nothing was behind me" because I don't think they would have got off very lightley no matter what it was,and the tyre that let go was only on the truck a week,anything can let go at anytime. And the thing about seeing the drivers face in the mirror,my mates dad told us that 30 odd years ago when passing stopped buses and such,one thing I've never forgotten from my younger stuipder days 8-) ;)
