Title: Gas Tank Removal For Spark Plug Change.
Post by Suzukisavvy on 04/24/14 at 08:32:01

I am changing the spark plug on my '98 savage and I want to know how to take off the gas tank so when I take it off I have EVERYTHING disconnected so I don't break anything. Got a list of what to disconnect and how to remove the tank? [smiley=huh.gif]

Note.. one small error in this tutorial...
If you have the stock petcock, and it's working properly,.. you don't need to drain the tank... just leave it set to the run/on position.
(You will also have one additional line to remove...from the back of the petcock going down to the right-side of the carb.. This is the vacuum line)...

With a Raptor, turn it to OFF...

You can mod one of the chrome doohickeys to be able to swing it out & access the plug w/o pulling the tank.
Blow the dirt out of the hole where the plug sits before pulling it,, Thats a No Kidding thing./.

Just quickly:

-Remove the seat(s) x3 bolts
-Remove speedo cable (right side by the clutch cable)
-Deal with the petcock as suggested: and unplug the line to the carb
-Unbolt the 2 bolts at the base of the tank
-Shift the tank forward a tad and pull it out enough so that you can unplug the bundle of electricals.

Go nuts.

Could I move the tank far enough to get to the spark plug with out unpluging all of the electronics?

Yes, if you remove the chrome bits and lift the rear end about 4" you have plenty of access.

but if you remove the chrome bit, you might not need to lift the tank, but that depends on your wrench.

The electronics is literally one whole bundle that clips on and off in half a second.

I was not able to pull my tank off when I had the stock petcock
