Title: Fuel economy check in time...
Post by WD on 04/22/14 at 23:19:47

Just for fun.

My 03 does 72 miles per day, minimum, at 45-65 mph. The last couple tanks have averaged 68.5 miles per gallon... and that's with a Memphis Shades Big Shot windshield slammed all the way forward on the mounts (nearly vertical)...

When I got it the bike was knocking down 41-43mpg. Guess I got the carburetor dialed in.

Dang...that is awesome! I got a rather large windscreen but I still haven't had the gonads to make mine burp to reserve yet.... I am always filling it back up at about 103 miles on the trip meter.

Guess i'll have to do a little figuring....

I fill it up daily. I do NOT want to run out of gas in Memphis. People already slow down around me, guess I look a bit too "motor officer" and they get scared... I'd probably get shot sitting on the side of the freeway.  :o

WD - that's impressive    My new one got 63-plus breaking it in(babying it)     Now I'm too heavy on the throttle for any respectable mileage    I bought a new Geo Metro in 1993   It got 49.9mpg on its first tankful(all city driving)      What are the specs on your carb ?

150/50 jets, mixture screw adjusted until it sounded right. Raptor petcock with the proper size fuel line and no inline filter.

I live at the highest point in the county (424 feet). And it is always humid. Based on the 98 that saw MS-TN-KY-AR-FL-LA-MO-WA-ID-OR, the engine likes humidity versus drier air.

WD - That is the jet combination that worked best in my bike before I made lots of engine changes.

My bike now has a Wiseco, Stage 1 Cam, some port work, and a Mikuni VM36, and it is a Cafe' conversion.  The last time I did a mileage check I was getting 57 mpg.

It will be interesting to see how that might change as I just did a Kawasaki Pulley conversion that brought the cruising rpm's way down.  My engine is now turning about 3,070 rpm at 60 mph.

I am very glad your enjoying the bike WD. The bigger question is though how is it on your back. I kinda worried when you said that was a concern. I think you said you dialed in the rear shocks as well.  It was a good bike to me, and I don't think my riding was ever harsh on it. Age aside... its a "young" bike in terms of life left ( in my opinion).

We need a pic of the WD version of the bike!!!

With the wide and low FL police bars, stock seat, Progressive shocks set on mid range and Big Shot, it's fine. Still need to relocate the rear turn signals and get the saddlebags on it. I may replace the license plate light with a round taillight and delete the stock one... never been fond of Savage/Intruder on fender taillights.

Working on a small light bar for the forks. So much easier on Pokey though with its high sidemounted headlight bucket...

Heading out to switch the windshield plastic for the new one. I'll take a few pics, but they won't get posted until Lisa works her magic. Going from the camera to her computer to Photobucket is far beyond my rudimentary computer skills.

I'm not an economy freak, and probably don't have it dialed in perfectly. I usually drive it hard and fast around town 95% of the time and usually only average around 40mpg. Never done any long trips and the best I have ever got is only 46mpg. Lately I've been noticing more shift pops and just general grumbling more from the exhaust, so I probably better check for air leaks again and should probably check out the jetting again (currently running a 147.5/55 combination at my elevation of about 4500')

With Fuelly.com I started tracking around the 3,000 mile mark. I have 95 fuel ups, 12,278 miles tracked, a $0.072 cost per mile and an average of 55.5 mpg. My best was 59.7 mpg. I am not a racer and have tried to be conscious of not laying on the throttle at the light. The 59.7 was during a period where I was trying to get the best mileage I could but could cross the 60 mpg barrier  :( I have no windshield and do a lot of freeway riding but rarely go over 75, usually around 65-72 (no real hurry to get to work ;D ). The bike is all stock in the carb and I have the raptor.

55# pilot seems kinda' large for 4500ft...
The pilot affects mpg pretty strongly...
You might try a 50#...

I have 50# pilot and I get rich pops above 5000ft... but I normally ride between 2600 and 4500ft...

I forgot, when I bought the jets, they didn't have a 50 in stock, so I went with the next up / 55 - always meant to stop back in and get another since they are cheap...gonna have to stop by I guess  :D

I'll second that.  I live not far from WD.

Check sig for mileage.

Yesterday's fuel up was right at 50mpg. Big windshield, saddlebags, wide handlebar and very heavy on the throttle. Time to check tire pressures (I want 40psi cold front and rear for best handling and economy) and stop trying to power wheelie it... which it won't do with the belt tension set correctly.

My normal take off is a fairly hard launch since my truck got rear ended at a green light... Memphis cage drivers see the light go green and if you are in front of them, they WILL hit you if you don't take off fast enough to suit them. Bike will go 0-30 almost instantly by "track slipping" the clutch.

I added MPG stuff in your Sam thread,..
I hafta wonder if the bags are catching enough wind to matter, with the legs out there in front. Youre shovin a couple O short 2X6's thru the wind with those boots out there,, I wonder if a low mounted kinda V shaped affair to deflect air at an angle out from under the bike would be worth the hassle/cost..

I just filled up after a very windy ride on Saturday.  On the way home it was about 60 miles of riding straight into the wind, and I believe the wind was a steady 10-15 mph with some really strong gusts.  I still managed to average 57.5 mpg.  I went 164.1 miles and put 2.85 gallons in the larger than stock tank.

On a calm day with steady cruising....I bet I can break into the 60mpg numbers! ;D

If a guy is really serious about stretchin the gas out, once he has made it "out in front" & no longer in mortal danger of being run down, then getting into high gear as soon as possible w/o lugging it is a good plan,.

Or Maybe Draftin! ;D

On the Saturday ride we came up behind a huge Wide Load that was a big monstrous rectangle covered in blue tarps.....it took up 2 lanes of interstate.  Just before we went around I could feel how much wind it was pushing out of our way....there was no wind in my face when we were behind that big box!

My 2001 would get about 46mph, about the same whether highway or putting around town. The only extra wind-catching equipment (besides my large frame) was a flyscreen.

When I got the bike, I put on the Emgo short megaphone like Ryca supplies. Within 30 miles, my pipes were starting to discolor. I went up one size on the pilot and main jets. I also did the white spacer mod. Didn't change the pilot screw, as I couldn't get the cover plug out. I broke a screw in the cover trying to get it out, so I just left it. The bike ran wonderfully. No flat spots. No hesitation. No discoloring, nice burble on decel, but no aftershots. An occasional poof if I shut down immediately after pushing it, but no gunshots.

When I got tired of the noise from that Emgo, I changed to a dyna muffler. I didn't change any carb tuning and got the same performance and mileage.

I know it was a little rich. I didn't need to choke to start until temps were below 40. It sooted the rear brake just a little bit, but nothing alarming.  It ran so well, I didn't decided that gas mileage hit was something I could live with.

86 stock except for a few simple things like cam chain and carb plug is getting 57 to 60...  by the way, what is the proper size fule line?

Ive done some drafting,, so, I dont recommend it,, It just doesnt feel safe, its effective, no doubt. If you can feel the wind trying to shove ya off the bike drop off, MPG is goin UP, for sure,,
