Title: Muffler help
Post by JRLeathercraft on 04/06/14 at 18:32:15

Hello,
I put a sportster muffler on my 96 savage.
I read the page with all the instruction with the tin can etc.

I did the steps, but a couple of things didn't quite add up:
I had to shorten the stock pipe so that the sporster muffler would go all t the way up to the collar. I tried it with out cutting the stock and it wouldn't fit right.

I couldn't find a clamp. I tried the Harley shop but the one I got from there was too big. I modified one, but I'm not sure it squeezes done enough.

Here's the problems:

I got it all together and I feel a bit of air escaping and the connection of the stock to the sportster.
I'm guess this is not a good thing.

I'm getting some back fire and  I think performance is suffering.

I thought there was no rejetting required.

Needless to say I spent hours on this thing and am pretty frustrated.

Any suggestions appreciated. Please see the pictures.

I just did the Dyna too. I couldn't find a T-clamp at any auto parts store, but yeah you need one that will clamp down tight. (Yoshi sent one with the muffler, fortunately).  I cut the dyna pipe with a grinder and thin metal cutting wheel at 12-2-4-6-8-10 about an inch and a half long.  Also did the tin can gasket and it all seems to be tight.  Regarding re-jetting, yeah I think you'll need to do that. (I did put a cone filter on too). I got Lancer's carb mod kit and put 2 washers, 152.5, and 52.5 main and backed the idle screw out 3 turns and I still get a little backfire when I shut it down. I'm too lazy to pull the carb again and try a 155 but the bike runs like a bandit now.

hey i just installed a new harley dyna muffler with my bobber project and virtually ELIMINATED backfires! (i mean, it still happens OCCASIONALLY, but they're so faint compared to what they used to be, and only happen when i'm closing the throttle fast). what i did was i cut the header pipe so the muffler can fit all the way like you did, and i used some PERMATEX HIGH TEMP RED SILICONE in the joint. hope that helps!

T clamps arent That hard to find. They sell them at a local hardware/garden supply store & at a bearing supply store. Ive never seen one in an auto parts store, Use the phone, if all else fails, order online, just search
T-clamp sale.,

Looking at your first pic I can see how it would be leaking, your saw cuts (to make it crimp down) are longer than your spacer that is underneath.

you need to make a longer spacer so that when you clamp down you only see the spacer underneath and not an empty space.

The photo's look pretty good...
If the leak is really tiny,.. it'll plug up with carbon in a week or two...
Are there enough cuts to let the clamp really tighten down on the pipe?...

PS...
I went to a stock airbox K/N filter and a Harley pipe, and at 2600ft, I did rejet... to a #150/50 main/pilot...
I get blats and pops on decel (love those),.. but no hard afterfires...

Yeah, those gargles are pretty cool.  One questions though.  I also did the KN filter and it really makes a noticeable difference.  I haven't figured out how to keep it air tight.  With the drop in square filter do I have to be concerned about air particles getting sucked in?

I went to amazon and bought a clamp for $7.  It was the 1.75,  their are a couple sizes you can get.  I also bought the 7" heat shield, it was $8.  It looks like you did it right and your real close.  Incidentally, what elevation are you at?

I noticed mine didnt sit perfectly in the space. I built some places up inside the airbox to make it seal off, but dang if I can remember exactly what all I had to do,.Been too many years.
Save a paper filter, too,, you can ride when the K&N is drying.

I'm at 5280 elevation - Denver!

I will redo the tin and make a bigger spacer.

I found a heat shield with flames on it - a bit tacky but will match my seats.

Regarding T clamps - is the attached picture correct?

Thanks for all the help/

Ok, so maybe this is the dumb question:

Does the tin go under the new pipe or above the new pipe?

I was putting it UNDER the new pipe.
:-X

Between the pipe and the muffler...

Wrap around the pipe and slide the muffler over... :-/...

Yeah, I put mine in between the header pipe and the new muffler.  But, I suppose you could put it on both sides.  :-?

After trying the tin-can two times and still leaking, I tried aluminum foil from a dollar store pie pan. That easily wrapped twice around the pipe and stayed in place while I placed the muffler over it. The muffler clamped down on it well (Cobra 1.75 t-clamp).
Still no leaks after about 300 miles.

I'd use some Permatex muffler& tailpipe sealer at the joint. No more leaks!

Use an adapter between header and muffler as per Dave's measurements (Dyna muffler adapter in tech section) with t-clamps and no leaks whatsoever. No need for any shims.  Still allows for using stock mount one bolt with dyna muff.
